BOOK-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,779, dated July 28, 1896.

Application filed February 19, 1896. Serial No. 579,896. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM DAVIS CAVE, of Lamar, in the county of Barton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in book-holders for holding open books for the use of organists and pianists and others, and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple, cheap, and durable device by which the book can be readily held and which will not interfere with the turning of the leaves when desired, the book being so easily taken out and replaced.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved book-holding device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the base formed, preferably, of a piece of light and ornamental wood of substantially the shape shown, being made as ornamental as may be preferred. At the lower end thereof is a pivoted hook or catch B, which is designed to engage a screw-eye 0, adapted to be secured into the piano or other support, so that when the board is placed in position and the hook engaged in the screw-eye the support will be held against movement, it being designed to be placed in the center where the musicbook is usually placed upon the organ or other instrument.

0 are spring-wires, each having an end passed into the base or support A, and coiled around the screw or other means D, by which it is held in position, and then a staple or analogous means E is placed over the wire adjacent to the screw or other means D, and then the wire is bent upward and thence downward and upon itself to form the springcoil F, which is adapted to rest upon the leaves of the book, there being two of these wires, one to rest upon the book on each side of the center.

G is a wire formed upon a curve, as shown, and having its ends formed into the eyes 9, which are sleeved upon the wires 0; and, between its ends, this wire G is formed with one or more coils or convolutes g. This wire is adapted to hold the curved portion of the main wires from spreading, and may be adj usted upon the same to hold them a greater or less distance apart, as may be required.

The operation will be apparent. The bookholder being placed in position, the book is opened and shoved upward under the springs which hold,the leaves open. The device is cheaply manufactured, easily applied, and the springs will readily allow of its being used in connection with books of greater or less thickness.

Modifications in details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The combination with the support and its pivoted hook, of wires having one end secured to the support and formed With coils adjacent to said end, a screw passed through said coils into the support, staples arranged over the wires adjacent to the screws, the other ends of the wires being curved and bent downward and toward their attached end, and a spring-Wire having eyes loosely receiving said wires, substantially as described.
