SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,712, dated July 28, 1896.

.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ PETERSON, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Moorheadville, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sandpapering-Machines'; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference markedV thereon, forming part of this specication.
My invention consists in the improvements in sandpapering-machines hereinafter Vset Vforth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a top or plan view of my improved sandpapering-machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken longitudinally through the center of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line a; in Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 -is a view in elevation of one end of the same, Ylooking in the direction of the arrowy in Fig. l.
Fig. 6 is detail view of a section of one .of the longitudinally-moving sandpaper-blocks of mymachine. Fig.V 7 is a detail view of one of the rollers and its adjusting mechanism. Fig. 8 is a plan view of a portion of the mechanism for operating the block N, drawn to a larger scale; and Fig. 0 is an end view ofthe same.
My invention consists in the construction of a sandpapering-machine having reciprocating sandpaper-blocks arranged in such a manner that they may be operated separately or simultaneously on a surface to be sandpapered in such a manner as to sandpaper all parts of the surface with the grain of the wood of which 'it is composed,so that doors and paneled work can be speedily finished in a satisfactory manner. To accomplish this result, I preferably construct myimproved sandpaperin g-machine substantially as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- A is the table of the machine, supported upon convenient legs A'. In the bars B, near the ends thereof, are also longitudinal slots b b', in which projections c on the bearings c' of the rollers C' operate, as hereinafter set forth.
In the bearings in the side frames of the i table A are mounted the lower feed-rolls E. These feed-rolls E project slightly above the surface of the table A,through transverse slots e therein. (See Fig. 3.) These feed-rolls E are driven by means of agear-wheel G on one end of a shaft F,mounted in bearings on the legs A' -at one end of the machine, which gear-.wheel G intermeshes with a'train G' of gear-wheels at one side of the machine, so as to drive all of Vthe lower feed-rolls E. This shaft F is driven by a belt over a pulley f thereon from the pulley f' on the main driving-shaft F', mounted in bearings in the legs A at the opposite end of the machineframe and provided with driving-pulleys F2.
To the outer ends of the shaftF and F',outside the gears G G', are secured cranks f2 and f3, which connect, by means of links H and H', with arms h and h' on rock-shafts I and I',

mounted in bearings in the upper bars A3 of the machine-frame. The connections of the links II and H' with the cranks f2 and f3 are adjustable thereon, so that the oscillation of 'the shafts I and I' can be limited as desired.

frame are mounted transverse sliding bars'J and J', and in the central portions of the rock-shafts I and Il are cranks I2 and I3, from which links i and t" extend and are pivoted to bars J and J', the ends of which are supported by and are moved longitudinally on the bars A3 of the machine-frame to and fro by the rocking of the shafts I and I'. On the bars J and J' are mounted vertically-adjustable bars J2 and J3, which may be adjusted down and up, toward and from the surface of the table A by means of vertical screws K, the lower ends of which are secured by collars Z: in the central parts of the adjustable bars J2 and J 3, and pass upward through threaded openings in the longitudinally-moving bars J and J', these screws being operated by bevel-gears k' on shafts K','mounted in bearings j and j on the upper ends of vertical standards fandj, secured to the adjustable bars J2 and J 3, and passing up through slots in the longitudinally-moving bars J and J', said shafts K' having hand-wheels K2 thereon. Projecting downward, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6, from near the ends of each of the vertically-adjustable bars J 2 and J 3 are arms J 4 and J 5, between which there is mounted, on trunnions Z Z therein, a sandpaper-block L, having adjustable blocks L' L' on one side thereof, so that it maybe rotated half around in the arms J 4 and J 5 to present the adjustable surfaces to the surface being sandpapered when it is not desired to operate on the whole surface of the work being sandpapered. Hand-screws Z' Z', extend through the ends of the arms J 4 and J l", being provided to secure the blocks L L from rotation when desired; it will thus be seen that the longitudinally-movin g bars J and J' and the adjustable bars J 2 and J 3 supported thereby move longitudinally in unison.
On one end of the rock-shaft I', as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, there is a large bevel gearwheel M,which intermeshes with a small bevel gear-wheel M' on a rock-shaft M2, mounted in a bearing m on the top of one of the upper side pieces A3 of the machine-frame. On the opposite end of this rock-shaft M2 is a crankarm m', to which is pivoted a link m2, the opposite end of which is pivoted to a transversely-sliding block N, there being a vertical slot m3 in the upper side piece A3 of the frame on that side of the machine through which said link m2 operates.
In vertical slots as a3 in the sides of the frame I mount vertically-sliding blocks O, between which transverse bars or rods o o extend, which form ways upon which the sliding block N travels. On each side of the machine-frame there are also mounted vertical screws P, which pass through projections on the vertically-sliding blocks O, and on the upper ends of these screws are bevel-gears p, which intermesh with bevel-gears p' on a transverse shaft P', whereby the screws P P can be simultaneously rotated, so as to raise and lower the blocks O O in unison. A handwheel p2 is provided on one end of the shaft P' for operating the saine. Through the central portion of the block N there is a slot, in which an upright arm u operates, to the lower end of which is secured a sandpaper-pad N', and to the upper end of this armn is pivoted a lever u', the opposite end of which lever is provided with a sleeve n2, which slides freely on a rod n3, and on the side of the block N there is secured an arm N2, in which the lever 'a' is pivoted, so that the depression of the rod n3 operates to raise the sandpaper-pad N' up toward the bottom of the block N. The rod n3 is secured at its ends to arms Q Q, which are secured to a transverse rod Q', j ournaled in the upper ends of the verticallysliding blocks O, and on one end of said rod is secured a ratchet-lever Q2,by means whereof the rod Q' may be rocked so as to raise and lower the rod 92.3, and thereby raise and lower the sandpaper-padN'vwhen it is desired to do so quickly, without waiting to raise the entire mechanism.
Near each end of the machine there is a roller C', which is mounted in bearings c, moving vertically in slots o in the longitudinally-adjustable frame R. (See Fig. 6.) These adjustable bearings c are also each provided with a projection o' thereon, which engages and operates in the longitudinal slots b in the vertically-movable side pieces B of the frame.
Extending from each end of the machineframe, under the table A, there is mounted a screw S, mounted in a bearing S' on the under side of the table A, which engages with the center of the lower part of the adjustable frame R, so that by the rotation of the screw S the frame R with its rollers C' can be moved toward or away from the end of the machineframe, as desired, so'that the longitudinallyreciprocating sandpaper-blocks L can be adj usted to move farther to and fro when desired. For operating this screw there is secured to the outer end thereof a bevel-wheel S2, which intermeshes with a like bevel-wheel t on a transverse shaft T, mounted in bearings in the end of the machine-frame, which shaft is operated by means of ahand-wheel T.
In operation the surface to be sandpapered is placed upon the table A and passed between the lower feed-rollers E and the upper rollers C and C'. As itpasses und er the recip- IOO IIO
rocating sandpaper-blocks L, N, and L', operating transversely to each other, the entire surface is gone over, but, if desired, any one or more of these sandpaper-blocks may be alone brought into contact with the surface to be operated on, the others being meanwhile raised up so as to be inoperative. It will also be observed that the upper rolls C C' and the reciprocating sandpaper-blocks L, N, and L' and the mechanism for adjusting and operating them can quickly be raised or 10W- ered to take in any thickness of material upon which it is desired to operate.
Having thus fully described my invention so as to enable others to construct and operate the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. The combination in a sandpapering-machine, of a table, feed-rollers therein, vertically and horizontally adjustable rollers for retaining the material to be operated upon down upon the feed-rolls, adjustable transversely and longitudinally reciprocating sandpaper-blocks, and crank-and-link mechanism for operating the same, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a sandpapering-machine, of a table, geared feed-rolls mounted in and projecting slightly above the surface of said table, a vertical frame secured to each side of said table, side bars supporting an upper set of rolls adapted to be adjusted up and down .in said side frames, longitudinallyreciprocating sandpaper-block mechanism capable of vertical adjustment in said side frames, a central transversely-reciprocating sandpaper-block mechanism capable of vertical adjustment in said side frames, rocking shafts and link mechanism, and adjustable crank-and-link mechanism for operating said reciprocating sandpaper block mechanism, substantially as set forth.
3. The combinationin a sandpapering-machine, of a longitudinally-reciprocating sandpaper-block L, mechanism J J 2 K lo and K for adjusting the same, a rock-shaft I and link z' connecting the crank in said shaft with the bar J, a crank-arm 72, on the end of said rock-shaft, a crank f2 on a driving-shaft F and a link H adjustably connected at one end with the crank f2, and at the other with said crank-arm h, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination in asandpapering-machine7 of a transversely-reciprocating sandpaper-block N N', screw-and-lever mechanism for vertically raising and lowering said block, a'rock-shaft M2 having a crank-arm m thereon and a link m2 connecting said crankarm m with said sandpaper-blockN N', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
