Description

VR. 152W. BBARDSLEY.
SUPPORTING POST POR BIGYGLBS. No. 564,142.
(No Model.)
Patented July 1 4, 1896-.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT F. WV.. BEARDSLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE R. F. BEARDSLEY COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SUPPORTING-POST FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION vfrming part of Letters Patent No. 564,142, dated July 14, 1896.
Application filed December 23, 1895. Serial No. 573,165. (No model.)
To all whom) t may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT F. W. BEAEDs- LEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting-Posts for Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a supporting-post for bicycles upon which to mount either the seat or the handle-bar, said post to have suflicient vertical elasticity to take up the vibration caused by an uneven roadway.
To such end it consists of certain features of construction which will be described, along with the advantages thereof, and carefully pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side eleva-- tion of the portion ofthe bicycle-frame upon which the seat is mounted. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the portion bearing the handlebar. Fig. 3 is a perspective, partly in diametrical section, of the portion of the machine containing my improvements. Fig. 4L is a side elevation of certain parts thereof. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section in line 5 5 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is a similar section in line 6l 6 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, A is the upright portion of the framework of the bicycle, in which the seat-post is ordinarily clamped, and B is a supporting-post containing my invention, and adapted in this case to serve as seat-post. Fig. 3 shows the construction of this post, a being a tubular outer sleeve; b, a stem, preferably square and loosely tted in a disk c, secured, preferably, by brazin g to the bottom of the tube ce; d, a retaining-pin,which prevents the stem b from being drawn out of the disk c, and e a second disk, which serves as a washer, sliding freely in the sleeve a. Between .this Washer and the disk cis coniined a spring f, which serves to give. the elasticity sought for in this invention. Above the washer e, and preventing it from sliding upward upon. the stem b, is a shoulder, preferably formed by a tube h, brazed to the stem, which extends upward and carries the horizontal portion i of the seat-post. The tube h is screw-threaded upon its outside and carries a nut j and jam-nut lo, by means of which the tension of the spring may be adjusted.
The post thus described is used as an ordinary seat-post, the seat being adjusted upon the horizontal portion t', and the vertical portion clamped in the bicycle-frame. The seat is free to move vertically against the force of the spring and the tension of the latter is adjustable without disturbing any of the parts by means of the nut j and jamnut k.
It will be noticed from the above description and accompanying drawings that most of the parts of the device are made up of regular stock tubing. This construction of a supporting-post is extremely cheap and simple, yet very strong'and eiiicient in its operation, and canevidently be made in vafrious sizes by using different sizes of tubing.
The same post can be applied to the han-l "dle-bar, as seen in Fig. 2, to take up the vibration of the latter.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a supporting-post for bicycles, the combination with the tubular casing, A, adapted to be secured in the frame of a bicycle, of the non-rotatable stem, b, the bottom, c, secured to the casing, a, the retaining-pin, d, the screw-threaded tube, h, secured to the upper end of the stein, b, the tube, t', the nut,
j, set-nut, k, and the spring, f, interposed between the bottom, o, and nut, j; substantially as described.
2. In a supporting-post for bicycles the combination of the sleeve, a, the post, B, hav- Ving the flat-sided stem, b, `the bottom, c, secured to the lower end of the tube and fitted to the stem, b, the pin, d, the washer, e, fitted to the interior of the tube, the spring, f, and the nut, j, threaded to the post; substantially as described.
