HEINRICH EHRHARDT, OF DUSSELDORF, GERMANY.
ROLLING-MILL FOR ROLLING SEAMLESS ANNULAR BODIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,009, dated July 14, 1896.
Application filed February 26, 1896. Serial 1T0. 580,849. (170 model.)
I Seam, Hoops, Rings, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to mills for rolling seamless annular bodies, such as cylindrical boiler-sections, hoops, rings, and the like, it having for its object to cause the pressure of the rolls to act progressively from the center toward the ends, instead of uniformly across the entire width of the sheet, as heretofore. In causing the rolls to act in this manner, the ring is stretched simultaneously in the direction of its width and circumferentially and is acted upon to greater advantage.
To this end my invention consists, essentially, in a set of rolls having one of its rolls oscillated in a plane tangential to the second roll.
The nature of my invention will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front view illustrating a set of rolls in their usual position. Fig. 2 is an end view of a set of rolls embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the upper roll.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the letters a and Z2 designate two rolls, which receive rotary motion in the usual manner. According to my invention, I impart to the boxes 6 of the upper roll horizontal oscillating motions in opposite directions. The boxes, as shown in Fig. 2, are mounted to slide in their housings and the oscillatory motion is imparted to the same by means of two eccentrics '0 set at an angle of one hundred and eighty degrees to each other. It is, of course, to be understood that the oscillation can be accomplishedby means of cams, screws, or other well-known mechanical equivalents of the eccentric. The annular blank 17 is prepared in a usual manner and slipped over the lower roll a. By the oscillating motion of the upper roll imparted to it as above described, and which motion takes place tangentially to the annular blank, the rolling action takes place progressively from the middle of the rolls toward the outer ends, and the spreading or rolling out is therefore facilitated both in the direction of the width and circumference of the blank. The finished blank is shown by full lines in Fig. 2.
What I claim as new is 1. In a set of rolls for rolling annular bodies, the. combination with the rolls, of means in operative connection with one of the rolls for oscillating the same, substantially as described.
2. In a set of rolls for rolling annular bodies, the combination with the rolls, of means in operative connection with one of the rolls for oscillating the same in a plane tangential to the other roll, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HEINRICH EHRHARDT.
Witnesses EMMA LIEBER, WILLIAM ESSENWEIN.
