ELIAS T. FORD, OF STILLVVATER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,397, dated July 17, 1866.
. State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Harvesting-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side perspective view of the machine arranged for harvesting grass. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 are detached sections of Fig. 1, showing certain parts more distinctly.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the drawings making a part of this specification.
Fig. 2 illustrates the tube and a part of the axle J extending to the left, also the right arm or section D, and flange U, left arm or section D, which constitute the pillow-block supporting multiplying-shaft J with the internal gear, G, pinion H, and left hinge of the finger-bar frame 0. The frame 0 is also hinged to the front of the right arm D by means of the hinge-rod E. The perforated bar F is located upon the hingerod E. The left section D is seen in Fig. 6 with the crank shaft hanger R, with the movable box S, there be ing two orifices or journal-bearings provided for the box S.
Fig. 4 presents the shoeL with four orifices, and it is located between the extensions X X of frame 0, and is retained to the frame 0 by two pivot-b0lts passing through the lower orifices made within the shoe L and at the points X X within the extensions of frame 0. The lever K, as seen in Fig. 3, is also pivoted to the shoe L, the pivots passing through the upper orifices, o, of the shoe L, as seen in Fig. 4:, and the right and left orifices W W of the lever K. Upon the upper portions of standards of shoe L, I supply the sockets or flanges r a formed upon the inner side, receiving and supporting the corresponding projections made upon the lever K at the points W W. The lever K is prevented from passing to the left farther than indicated in Fig. l; but the finger-bar O can be elevated perpendicular with the lever K, or, in other words, folded with the lever K, Fig. 2. I now take the crank-shaft Z, with the pinion V, and locate them upon the frame 0, as seen in Figs. 2 and 1, having its rear bearing at the point Y and its front hearing within the universal box S, which is hinged or pivoted to the hanger R, as seen in Figs. 5 and 6. The bearings of the box S are located Within the orifices or journalbearings formed within the hanger R, as be fore mentioned. The internal gear, G, receives the pinion V of crank-shaft Z. The seat-iron P, as seen in Fig. 7, is connected to the lugs U U, as seen in Figs. 2 and 1, arranged. with the seat R, and is susceptible of adjustment by means of four bolts, 3 y. The adjustable and perforated bar F, as seen in Fig. 2, passes through the mortise made within the polesection Q, as also seen in Fig. 1, and is attached to the section Q by the bolt J passing through the flanges provided upon the section Q, Fig. 1. The pole section Q embraces the tube B near its center. The armsD D, as seen in Fig. 2, and the left arm D, as seen in Fig. 6, are inserted upon the tube B and made rigid thereto, or may be cast as a whole in connection with the rear lugs, U U, and tube B.
Fig. 6 represents the bearings o and f of the multiplying-shaft J formed with the left arm or pillow-block D. I now take the parts as seen in Fig. 2 and arrange other parts-viz., as seen in Fig. 1. The large bevel-gear T is located upon the left portion of the axle J. Next thereto 1 place the drive-section m adjacent to the bevel-gear T. I now insert the left drive-wheel A, with a ratchet formed near the hub of the same, so that the drive section m, with catch, is operated by the spring press in g the catch into the ratchet of drive-wheel A. The gear T is so arranged with the multiplying-shaft J as to come in contact with the pinion H, as seen in Figs. 2 and 1. The internal gear, G, is placed upon the front ex- (remit-y of the multiplying-shaft J The universal box S receives the front extremity of the crank-shaft Z, as seen in Figs. 6 and 5, the internal gear, Gr, receiving the bevel-crank pinion V. The rear bearing of the crank-shaft Z has its bearing at the point 1 upon the left and rear portion of the frame 0, as seen in Fig. 1, connected with other parts. The shoe L, with the lever K, is located with the frame 0, as before described.
The finger-bar O is secured to the shoe in the usual manner and made rigid with the same. The right drive-section m, with catch,
I now place upon the axle J at the right extremity of the tube B, adjacent to the right arm D, and next thereto I insert the right drive-Wheel A, with a circular ratchet similar to that of the left drive-wheel A, as before referred to.
The guard-bar N is secured to the pole-section Q, it being bent at right angle near the flange of the right drivewvheel A. The lower branch is connected to the bar N near the angle, as seen in Fig. 1, extending downward to the shoe L. The drive-wheels A A are not rigid to the axle J, but only as connected by means of the drive-sections m m. As before mentioned, the foot-lever a has its fulcrum upon the tube B, and is connected to frame G by chain and hook.
Operation: As the drive-wheels A A are put in motion the catch ofthe drive-section m comes in contact with the ratchets u u of the Wheels A A, thereby moving the axle J, with gear T, turning the corresponding pinion H, shaft J and internal gear, G, with pinion V, crank-shaft Z, operating the connecting-rod I) and knife-bar, as seen in Figs. 2, 3, 5 and 1. The finger-bar O is elevated or depressed by means of the lever K. The finger-bar 0 can be folded with the lever K. .The first operation is effected by moving the lever K to the left, the shoe L being the fulcrum, thereby elevating the right portion of the finger-bar O for the purpose of passing over stones, stumps, and other like objects; and the barO can conform to the unex en surface of the ground, provision being made in the hinges, as before described, in that the shoe L and the frame 0 are hinged to the right and left arms D D by means of the hinge-bar E, and the bar E, with the frame 0, may be adjusted to the pole-secthrough the different orifices of the bar F and flanges of the section Q. The frame 0 is elevated by depressing the front extremity of lever a. The finger-bar O can be folded to the lever K by elevating the bar 0, so as to stand perpendicular with the lever K, and may be kept in this position by a rod fastened to the bar 0 and extending to the frame 0.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The frame 0, hinged to the front extremities of arms D D, in combination with the rod E, adjusting-bar F, and pole-section Q, embracing the tube B, substantially as described.
2. The left arm, D, forming the pillow-block or frame, constructed as described, and provided with the bearings e f, hanger It, and universal box S, and arranged in relation to the tube B and frame 0 substantially as described.
3. The lever K, constructed as described, and pivoted ate 1; to standards on the shoe L, in combination with the flange-stops r o formed on said standard, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
4. The arrangement of the adjustable rod F, hanger R, box S, bar E, lugs U U, shoe L and lever a, in combination with the tube B, arms D D, and frame 0, in the manner and for the purpose herein specified. I
ELIAS T. FORD.
