SOUNDlNG-POST FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,689, dated July '7, 1896. Application filed October 28, 1895. Serial No. 567,180. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that 1, AUGUST RENNER, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana,have invented an Improved Sounding-Post for Stringed Musical Instruments.
The following, accompanied with drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention.
Figure 1 represents the post; Fig. 2, vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3, vertical longitudinal section of the post filled; Fig. 4, cross-section of Fig. 1 on line 7 Fig. 5, crosssection showing more than one channel filled; Fig. 6, cr0ss-seotion on line Sin Fig. 3, showing one channel filled; Fig. 7, instrument with side opened, showing post in'position.

I-Ieretofore sounding-posts have been used of solid wood and hollow cane.
The object of my invention is to improve the sound of any violin or other stringed musical instrument to which it can be applied.
To attain the object of my invention, I use wood, cane, bamboo, rattan, or anything of a like nature, of a desired length and thickness, Fig. 1, With one or more longitudinal channels, Fig. 2, and fill the same full and firm with any kind of soft metal or composition of soft metals 10 to increase the volume of sound resulting from the transmission of vibrations of the strings to 3, the sound-board or top through 4, the post where the metal causes the vibration to be limited to the wood 11, or spaces in Fig. 5 between the metal.
I am aware that wood, cane, and other sounding-posts of the same pattern have been used prior to my invention.
What I do claim for my invention is- A violin sound-post provided with a longi= tudinal channel in which is a metallic filling, as and for the purpose set forth.
