COMBINATION-PLOW.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Ijatent No. 563,518, dated July 7, 1896.

Be it known that l, WILLIAM HENRY SUT- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mineral Springs, in the county of Howard and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Combination-Plow, of which the following is a speciiication.

The invention relates to improvements in plows.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of plows, and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient one adapted to receive all kinds of blades or shovels, and capable of having its standards arranged in alinement directly beneath the plow-beam, or at opposite sides thereof to arrange the blades or shovels according to the character of cultivation desired.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a plow constructed in accordance with this invention, the standards being located at opposite sides of the plow-beam. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showin g the standards arranged beneath the beam. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, the parts being arranged as shown in Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a reverse plan view, partly in section, the parts being arranged as shown in Fig. 2.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

l designates a plow-beam having secured to its rear end plow-handles 2 of any desired construction, and the plow is provided with a pair of standards 3 and .t, adapted to be arranged at opposite sides of the plow-beam, as illustrated in Fig. l of the accompanying drawings, or directly beneath the plow-beam, as shown in Fig. 2. The standards are composed of two sides or bars arranged substantially parallel. They have horizontal upper portions and depending curved portions, and the blades and shovels employed are secured to the depending curved portions of the standards in the usual manner.

When the standards are arranged at opposite sides of the plow-beam, as shown in Fig.

l of the accompanying drawings, transverse bars 5 are employed. These bars are centrally secured to the lower face of. the plowbeam and extend laterally from opposite sides thereof and have their terminals 6 bent downward and perforated, and the horizontal portions of the side bars of the standards are bolted or otherwise secured to the depending portions of'the transverse bars, and are located at opposite sides thereof. By this construction a perfectly rigid support or framework is provided.

The fasteningdevice S of the front transverse bar is provided with a rectangular head 9, and when the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings the rectangular head or block of the front fastening device is interposed between the side bars of the front standard, the side bars of the standards being secured to the said block or head by a horizontal fastening device ll. The fastening device l2 of the rear transverse bar carries at its lower end a clip l3,.which re-Y ceives and supports the side bars of the standards adjacent to the curved portions thereof.l

lt will be seen that the standards are capable of receiving any of the ordinary blades or shovels employed in cultivators, and that as' the standards may be arranged one in rear of the other, directly beneath the plow-beam or at opposite sides thereof, the plow will be capable of a large variety of uses, and that only one of the standards need be used when a single plow is desired. Y

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, and l desire to have it understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing any of the advantages of this invention.

Vhat l claim is l. In a plow, the combination of a plowbeam, transverse bars extending laterally from opposite sides of the plowbeam,and having depending portions at their ends, a pair of standards composed of opposite side bars and adapted to be secured to the Vdepending IOO portions of the transverse bars and to be also y arranged directly beneath the plow-beam, and fastening devices securing the transverse bars to the plow-beam and also enabling the standards to be attached to the same, substantially as and for the purpose described.
