6. FRIOKB. AIR TIGHT PAC KAGE FOR BAKING POWDER.
Patented July 1896.

PhT NT- CHARLES rmonn, or 'sAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIAQASSIGNOR OF onu- 1mm? TO isinonn LIEVRE, or S AME PLACE.
AIR-TIG HT PACKAG E'MEO R ARi-NcowoEns.
' srncrrrcnrion forming part of I ietters pae'a No.'56 3,366, dated July 7, 1896.
Application filed August 3, 1895.
To all whom, it may concern:
lie it known that I, CHARLES FRIGKE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city I and county of San Francisco, State of Galilornia, have in'ventcdfa newu 'nd useful Improvement in .A ir-Tight Packages for Bakinglowders and Methods oi Filling the Same, of
This invention relates to a certain new and useful method of rendering baking-powder packages air-tight.
7 It isa well-known fact that in putting up bakingpowders in packages moisture will soon. accumulate, causing the powder to cake .or ball up and to adhere to the sidesof the package and impair the strength and 'eilieieney of the powder, and more especially is this the case'with packages made of tin, as they are-seldom if ever made air and moisture proof, even when the can is lined with paper, so far as my knowledge and experience extend. Hence the object of my invention is to render such packages air and moisture tight, and preserve the purity and strength of the contents fora long'period of time. This 1 I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings,-in which};
- Figure I is a perspective view hf my inn-- A proved package afterit is filled and before the end of the can has been placed and united to the body. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of {the can with the paper bag in position ready to be filled, the can being broken away to ex- 'posethe bottom p0 Lion 6f the bag.
' A cylindrical tin can A, provided with the usual opening 11*- in the top and a screwrcap B on the-same, is used in making is improved package; but instead of being closed at the bottom previous to being filled! I leave it open at the bottom, and through tgat end I introduce and place in position a p or bag E, constructed for the purposefof cylindrical shape and about the same diameter as the metal body and somewhat longer t a'ii the body of the can, so that when placed in it the mouth of the .bag will stand above the end end or bottom of the the bag swamp. 558,127. (No new.)
i can A, having the paper bag E inserted, as
already described, with the bottom next the opening 13*, is placed in inverted position and the powder or other substance is poured in until the bag is filled, after which themouth 1 of the paper bag is'folded over and theend is covered and sealed by placing theinetal,
bottom C over the end of the can and securing it by crimping the metal. Bythis means both ends of the bag are sealed, which is not possible when one end of the can is provided with a screw-cap of less diameter than the body of the can.
Theusual marking to indicate the'name and quality of the contents are applied to the bag before it is placed in the can.
7 Having thus described my invention, what Y I. claim, and desire to secure by Letters ent,isr a Theherein-described air-tight package for baking-powders and similar substances, consisting of the metal exterior body having a standing rim, a removable screw-cap fitted tosaid rim, an air-tight paper bag formed to fit the-metal body andinserted in the same in an inverted position or'with its closed bottom toward the said opening in the head beans" eircular opening in'it's head provided with av fore the opposite-end of the metal body is closed and a solid head or end adapted to per manently close the bottomof the metal body a after the can has been filled through the mouth of. the bag, substantially as described.
In- .testimony that I claim the foregoing I 1 have hereunto set my hand and seal.
