Description

(No Model.)
0 H. ORENDORFP. FENCE POST.
No. 562,909. Patented June 30, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER H. ORENDORFF, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 562,909, dated June 30, 1896. Application filed. Apr-i123, 1896. Serial No. 588,715. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER H. ORENDORFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean .and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in fence-posts and braces therefor, the object of the same being to provide a post of such character that it will be firm and stanch regardless of the direction of the strain.
A further object is to provide a post which will be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the certain features of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the post put together. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the separate parts, and Fig. 5 is a view of the cap.
A and B represent two wedge-shaped posts, made of wood or any other suitable material. These posts are provided with vertical grooves or recesses a and b, which may extend any suitable distance therein. As shown in the drawings, the post A is grooved at its larger or broader end, and the post B at its smaller or narrow end. Thus when the grooved post A is inserted in the slot 17 they both engage each other and form a tight and laterallyimmovable joint. The post Ais made longer than its mate in order to receive the cap 0, which is suitably secured thereon, thus firmly binding the parts together.
A band dis adapted to fit over the narrow or wedge-shaped ends of the post, which is provided with suitable grooves a and h to engage the outer edges of the posts and serve to bind them together at that end.
The broad part of the post with its cap C, which is enlarged, as shown, is intended to be placed in the ground and when covered has a substantial hold therein. The post may be used for either boards or wires by having 3 suitable holes drilled therein to receive wires or screws.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fence-post consisting of two wedgeshaped sections, both sections having vertical grooves formed therein at opposite ends, a cap engaging one of said sections at its large end and a band engaging the upper and smaller end of said post, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, OLIVER H. ORENDORFF.
