Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
MATHIAS SMITH, OF LAKE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED STREET-SCRAPER.
, Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,285, dated July 10, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MATHrAs SMITH, of Lake, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Street-Scrapers; and I do hereby de clare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters and gures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention consists in a novel apparatus, to be drawn by one or more horses, whereby streets may be thoroughly scraped and cleaned and the refuse moved to any place, as desired, and there deposited in a simple and easy manner, as hereinafter described, the operation of the said apparatus being very effectual both as regards thoroughness in work and rapidity of execution.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, l will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan or top View of my invention 5 Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 a vertical section thereof at the line x in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same parts of my invention.
A represents the wheels which support the machine, B being the axle, and C the thills, which latter, however, may be exchanged for a draft-pole or tongue if it should be desired to employ two draft-horses. D represents a front cross-bar, and E rear cross-bars, upon the said thills, which rest upon and extend back of the axle, as shown, so that the machine is properly balanced by the driver or operator upon the seat S.
F G represent two vertical arms upon each thill or side of the machine, and extending down to the ground, or nearly so, K being braces to keep said arms securely in place.
Between the arms F, in suitable vertical grooves upon their interior sides, is arranged an adjustable slide or scraper, H, extending transversely across the machine, having a vertical adjustment, its lower edge lying upon-the ground when in use, and being raised up, when desired, by the driver by means of a lever, J, and connecting-rod I, as shown. To the lower end of the said arms F are pivoted the side boards, L, whose front ends moveV freely in su itable guides in the arms G, so that said side boards lie edgewise upon the ground as the machine moves along, notwithstanding any vertical or up and down motion ot' the front end of the machine.
As the machine moves along the scraper H scrapes along allA the loose earth or other substances, the side boards, L, preventing the same from escaping at the sides,.while the driver, at will, may raise up said scraper, as aforesaid, and deposit the load wherever desired.
Having described the construction and operation of my'invention, I will now specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. The combination ofthe adjustable scraper H, the guides F, and lever J, arranged and operating substantially as and for the pulposes set forth. I,
2. In combination with the said adjustable scraper H, the employment of the adjustable side boards, L, arranged as and for the purposes described. MATHIAS SMITH.
