Be it known that I, HENRY H. CLEVELAND, Y a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip-Sockets, of which'the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices adapted to be attached to a vehicle in any suitable position and which is employed to hold and confine a whip in a substantially vertical position upon a vehicle.
The primary object of my invention is to provide means by which an attachment may be applied to the Whip-socket for holding a whip whereby the attachment may be locked by means of a key,so that the whip is securely and firmly held and maintained in position upon the vehicle during the absence of the owner, or the person rightfully in possession of the whip, thus preventing the wrongful removal of the whip from the vehicle by any person other than the one in possession of the key.
My invention has for its further object the provision of an attachment for a whip-socket substantial and compact in form and of a character to be cheaply constructed, adapted for ready attachment in the desired suitable position on the socket, which shall readily receive the whip and which when adjusted about said whip shall firmly hold and securely maintain the whip in its proper position within the socket without in any manner damaging or marking the surface of that portion of the whip grasped,and which whip is securely held in place and incapable of being withdrawn from the socket until after the attachment is unlocked.
My invention has for a further object the provision of an attachment capable of ready application to any whip-socket and which is of such compact construction as to add but little to the size of the whip-socket.
To these ends my invention consists in a pair of whip-grasping arms, which are pivoted together and one of which carries the locking mechanism,these arms being pivoted together and adapted to hold the whip between them when locked together at that end opposite to the point of hinging or pivoting and which release the whip when the arms are unlocked. A hinged two-part securing-ring is provided, adapted to be mounted upon the upper end of the whip-socket in order to hold the attachment in place upon the whipsocket, the grasping-arms being pivotally mounted and secured upon the two-part fastening-ring.
Reference may now be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a carriage-box and dash,showin g the socket and attachment in position holding a whip. Fig. 2is an enlarged view of the upper portion of a whip-socket, showing the attachment thereon in perspective. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the attachment, showing a whip held thereby and also showing the locking mechanism. Fig. at is a sectional view on the line 00 a: of Fig. 3, showing the locking mechanism engaged by the key. Fig. 5 is a detail enlarged sectional view of the locking-head. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the two-part pivoted or hinged fastening-ring. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the attachment, showing a form of locking mechanism adapted to be operated by means other than a key.
Referring to the attachment shown as a whole in Fig. 2 more clearly, the grasping-arms A and A are hinged or pivoted together at A and one of said arms carrying the locking mechanism inclosed within the casing A A two-part fastening-ring is provided, consisting of the two embracing bands 13 and B pivoted or hinged together at B and also held when secured about the upper end of a whipsocket B by means of the fastening-bolt B passing through the lugs 13. The graspingarms A A and the two-part fastening-ring are held together by the common pivot-pin D, passing through the hinged ends of said arms and ring. A spring H, disposed between the arms A Aiserves to separate said arms on their hinges when they are released by unlocking, anda spring-stop D is provided against which the arm A is held when a locking of the arms together is being effected.
The locking mechanism, as shown in Figs. 3, 4E, and 5, consists of two springs J, adapted to engage the head J and this head is so notched at J Fig. 5, as to permit the notched key .1, Fig. 4, to swing by said head in order to press apart and disengage the springs G from the head J 2 and thus unlock the arms A A In Fig. 7 I have shown a modified form of locking device, consisting of a spring K, adapted to engage the head K and which spring is withdrawn from engagement of the head K by the push-bar K and thumbplate K.
It will now be apparent that this attachment, consisting of the grasping-arms A A pivoted together and to the fasteningring, may be secured in position upon the upper end 01": any whip-socket by simply engaging the bands B B of the fastening-ring about the said upper end, and securing these two bands about the whip-socket by means of the bolt 13. It is obvious that this two-part fastening-ring will secure the attachment upon different sizes of whip-sockets since the two bands B B may turn upon the pivot or hinge B It is in r ther apparent that the two graspingarms A and A have a movement upon their pivot A when either locked or unlocked, and that when unlocked it is simply necessary in order to lock said arms together to force the arm A against the stop B and then by forcing the arm A against the arm A cause the head J 2 to engage with the springs J.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, it will be observed that the whip L is held in position and securely locked by the engagement of the grasping-arms A A and as the spring II normally tends to cause these grasping-arms to fly apart when the same are unlocked the whip may be readily withdrawn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An attachment for whip-sockets consisting of a two-part fastening-ring hinged together and means for securing said two parts together about the end of a whip-socket together with grasping-arms pivoted together and hinged to the fastening ring which arms carry locking mechanism and a stop against which one of said arms is adapted to engage.
