METALLIC COVER FOR TABLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,226, dated June 16, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HANDLEY B. KIMBALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Birmingham, in the county of .Ieiferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Covers for Tables and other Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in covers or tops of granite or enameled ironware and means for securing them to tables, extension-table leaves, stands, counters and other similar articles; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficiency in use.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a table-top constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view looking from the under side. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of an extension-table leaf with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the metallic cover removed, looking from the under side.

In the said drawings, referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the reference-numeral 1 designates a rectangular board or block secured to the upper end of the leg or pedestal 2 of what is generally termed a center-table. Each edge of this block is beveled from the lower to the upper side, forming outwardly-flaring sides 3, against which abut the wedges 4, consisting of wooden blocks having their lower edges beveled to correspond with the beveled sides of the block and their ends mitered as seen at 5. The outer sides of these wedges are rounded as seen at 6.

The numeral 7 designates a cover of granite or enameled ironware, rectangular in form and the sides turned down and curved inwardly forming moldings 8, to correspond with the rounded sides of the wedges, and the extremities turned outwardly and upwardly around a wire frame 9 approximately rectangular in form.

The numeral 10 designates ribs soldered or otherwise secured to the inner side of the cover which are adapted to engage with corresponding slots in the top 1.

In carrying the invention into effect, the granite or enameled ware cover, with the edges turned up and the stiffening-wire engaged therewith, is placed over the top 1, and the wedges then inserted between the beveled sides thereof and the molding of the cover. The blocks are then secured to the top by screws 12. A cover thus constructed and secured will be very durable and efficient in use, and while it is securely held in place, yet it can be readily removed when desired.

In Fig. 3 I have shown a granite or enameled ware cover secured to an extension-table leaf and in Fig. 4 I have shown the cover removed. The cover in this instance is shown as formed similar to that above described except that the ends only are curved to form moldings. In this instance the numeral 13 designates the table leaf, having one end rounded andthe other end cut away and beveled, as seen at 14, with which beveled end engages a wedge 15, having a rounded or curved end 16. This wedge is screwed, glued, or otherwise secured to the leaf after the cover is applied.

The numeral 17 designates the cover, of granite or enameled ware, rectangular in form with its ends turned down and curved forming moldings 18 and the extremities bent upward and embracing stiffening-wires 19.

In applying this cover the same is slipped on the leaf and the wedge inserted in place and secured by screws or other means. The cover is provided with a transverse rib 20, which engages with a corresponding slot in the leaf.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim isg 1. The combination with the metallic cover having its sides or ends bent or curved to form moldings and the extremities bent or curved and engaging with stiffening-wires, of the top or leaf having beveled sides or 10 screws, substantially as described.

3. As an improved article, a granite or enameled metal cover having its ends or sides bent downward forming moldings and the extremities curved upward, the stiifening-Wires engaging therewith and the ribs secured to the cover, substantially as described.
