Description

H. BARBER. WHIFPLETREE.
No. 562,063. -PatentedJune16,1896;
proved whiflietree WV. Fig.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM BARBER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WHIFFLETREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,063, dated June 16, 1896.
Application filed September 24:, 1894. Serial No. 523,900. (No model.)
To all whom) it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eveners or Whiftletrees; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the wooden bar E, provided with the metal jacket J, as used in combination in the construction of my improved whiffietree WV. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the metal jacket J used in combination with the wooden bar E in my imis a view in cross-section, on the dotted line 1 1, of the wooden bar E and of the metal jacket J used in the construction of my improved whiffietree W.
The object of my invention is to provide a wooden whiffletree or evener with a central supporting or strengthening metallic jacket, whereby its efficiency is increased.
Referring more specifically to the drawings by letter, E represents a wooden evener or doubletree of ordinary construction.
J represents myimproved metallic jacket, designed to inclose and strengthen the middle or central portion of the evener.
WV represents the evener with the inclosing jacket in position.
It will be observed that the jacket is composed of a central oblong tubular portion designed to entirely surround and embrace the central portion of the evener or whiffletree, and is provided on its upper and lower sides with projecting arms or plates united at their ends by a side loop extending forwardly to a line coincident with the front face of the central portion and designed to inclose and embrace the front portion of the evener at a point beyond the central tubular portion, as shown in Fig. 1, thus making the construction of the jacket somewhat skeleton in form in order that the greatest result may be attained with the least metal, thereby economizing weight and material without decreasing the efficiency of the device.
In the construction of my improved evener or whiffletree for common use I preferably form the wooden evener-bar about four feet in length and four and one-half inches in width and one and five-eighths inches in thickness and the inclosing jacket about twenty inches in length, including the projecting arms and loops, thus making the latter em brace and operate upon a little less than onehalf of the evener or whiffletree intermediate of its ends.
I am aware that iron plates have been made use of for many years for the purpose of strengthening wooden whiflietrees and saving them from abrasion.
I am also aware that whiffletrees have been provided with a narrow central metallic band usually provided with a rearward-extending eye or other device for attaching them to the evener or vehicle, and I do not claim, broadly, a central metallic band; but I am not aware that an extended metallic skeleton jacket for the purpose of reinforcing and strengthening a wooden whiffietree or evener has been used, 7 5 and What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a wooden whiffletree or evener of the metallic jacket J, formed 80 with a central portion entirely inclosing the central part of the evener, and end extensions or arms terminating in a lateral or forwardlyextending loop designed to embrace and inclose the front portion of the evener, substan- 8 5 tially as and for the purpose set forth.
Dated at Chicago, September 20, A. D. 1894.
IIIRAM BARBER.
In presence of- EDWIN A. THOMAS, CHAS. A. DIBBLE.
