CARPET-STRETCH ER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,027, dated June 16, 1896. Application filed October 3, 1894. Serial No. 524,834. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, W'ARREN T. REASER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Carpet-Stretcher, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to carpet-stretchers; and it has for its object to provide a new and useful device of this character that is adapted to be readily adjusted to the hand to allow a person to readily stretch and hold the carpet while at the same time providing for convenientl y holding the tack for driving.

WVith these and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carpet-stretcher constructed in accordance with this invention, the hand to which the stretcher is applied being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is atransverse sectional view of the stretcher, with the strap folded, as applied to the hand. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the stretcher with the strap folded out straight.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a hand-strap that is sufficiently long to provide for encircling hands of different sizes, and the free ends of said strap are adapted to be adjustably connected together by a button, buckle, or other suitable adjustable connection 2, whereby the strap may be securely fastened on the hand of any person.

At a point intermediate of its ends the handstrap has permanently secured to one side thereof a pair of spaced hook-plates 3. The spaced hook-plates 3 are'attached to the strap at right angles or transversely to its length by means of staples or other suitable fastenings 4, and are provided at one end with the U-shaped pointed engaging hooks 5, that are adapted to engage in a carpet, so that the proper hold maybe secured for stretching the carpet.

With a right-handed person the hand-strap 1 is usually fastened on the left hand with the pair of hooks disposed under the palm of the hand. Thus attached the points of the hooks are disposed forwardly from the person, so that by engaging the hooks in the carpet such carpet can be readily stretched and held in position while the tack is being driven. The attachment of the stretcher to the hand leaves the fingers and thumb free to hold the tack while being started for driving. 7

Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

A carpet-stretcher consisting of a handstrap, the ends of which are adapted to be adj ustably connected together over the back of a persons hand, anda pair of spaced hookplates attached to one side of the strap at an intermediate point and at direct right angles or transversely to its length, said hook-plates being provided at one end with U-shaped pointed engaging hooks, the points of which hooks are disposed toward the side edge of the strap farthest from the body of the person to whose hand the strap is applied, substantially as set forth.
