WASHING-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,981, dated June 16, 1896.

as hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a washing-machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof on line 00 as, Figll. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section on line y y, Fig. 2.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the boX or tub of the machine, and B designates an upright beater, which has journals on its lower end, mounted in ears 0, which are connected with the floor or bottom of the tub. Connected with the side of the tub, rearward of the beater B, is a spring D, against which said beater is adapted to bear, so as to receive the impact of said beater and restore the same to its normal position.

E designates a beater which is opposite to the beater B and is connected at F with the arms G on the lower ends of the swinging segments II, which latter have their axis J in the ears K on the upper part of the tub A, said segments having portions of the same adapted to move through the top of the tub and having the handle L connected with them, it being noticed that when said beater E is operated it advances in an arc and forces the garments or other articles to be washed toward the beater B and raises the same upwardly against said beater, so that they turn thereon, after which they fall and are again raised and thus overturned, so as to be effectivelywashed, it being noticed that the beater B yields under the pressure of the garments or articles and moves backwardly on its axis, so that the garments, &c., can ascend the same, and strain is removed from the boaters.

Connected with one of the axis of the segments H is an arm M, which projects downwardly and is adaptedto engage with either of the limbs of the elbow-lever N, mounted on the side of the tub, one limb of said lever being connected by the link P with the piston Q of the air-pump R, which is attached to the side of the tub and connected with the airconveying pipe S, the latter having a branch T, which enters the tub, where it is connected by the pipe U with the discharge-pipe V, said pipe S having a check-valve W therein, and said pipe V being perforated, it being seen that when the beater E is operated swinging motion is imparted to the arm M, whereby the elbow-lever N is operated in opposite di-.

rections, so that the pump R is actuated and air is accordingly forced through the pipes S, T, U, and V into the tub, and consequently through the water and garments, &c., whereby the garments, &c., are thoroughly Washed and cleansed and subjected to the action of the air, which aerates and thus purifies the same and renders them more healthy when worn.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a washing-machine, a tub, a beater journaled therein, an arm on the journal of said beater, an air-pump with a piston, an elbow-lever connected with said piston, and having either of its limbs adapted to be engaged by said lever, and an air-pipe leading from said pump to the interior of said tub, substantially as described.

2. In a washing-machine, a tub, a beater journaled therein, an arm on the journal of said beater, an air-pump with a piston, mech-- anism intermediate of said arm and piston, whereby the latter is reciprocated, and a connection between said pump and the interior of said tub, substantially as described.

3. In a washing-machine, the combination of thetub, a swinging lever secured thereto and operated by the movement of the handle of the tub, an elbow-lever pivoted to said tub and having each of its limbs adapted to be engaged by said lever, an air-pump with pipes leading into said tub, and a link connected with said air-pump and one of the limbs of said leversubstantially as described.
