B. G. ATKINS. INSERTIBLE SAW TOOTH HOLDER.
Patented June 2, 1896.
INVENTOH Elias a. AI /6705,
WITNESSES Illllllllll I yhta' NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS O. ATKINS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
-|NSERT|BLE-SAW-TOOTH HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,080, dated June 2, 1896. Application filed December 4, 1895. Serial No. 571,008. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIAS O. ATKINS, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Insertible-Saw-[looth Holders, of which the following'is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of saws in which there are holders or containing-pieces for the cutting points or teeth, which are formed separately from the saw-bladeand afterward attached thereto by rivets or otherwise; and it consists in a construction whereby the strain of the saw-teeth is exerted solely upon said containing-pieces, which are arranged to be held securely Within the spaces formed therefor in the saw-blade and at the same time adapted to move slightly without binding on said saw-blade, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a side elevation of a fragment of a saw provided with containing-pieces and saw-tooth points and holders, said containing-pieces being constructed and attached in accordance with my said invention Figs.2 and 3, vertical sectional views on the dotted lines 2 2 and 3 3, respectively, in. Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a substantially horizontal sectional view on the dotted line 4t 4 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 a perspective view of a smaller fragment ofthe saw-blade and the containing-piece carrying a saw-tooth point and its immediate holder separately and illustrating more clearly the construction of the parts whereby they are attached together. All these parts except the containing-piece are or may be of any usual or desired construction and will not therefore be further described herein except incidentally in describing the invention.
The containing-pieces A are secured in recesses formed therefor in the saw-plate B and carry the saW-tooth'points O and the holders D therefor, the latter, as before stated, being of any usual or desired form.
The recesses in the saw-blade are, as most plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 5, scarfed away at the upper side, preferably entirely across their width, as at b, and the containing-pieces are preferably correspondingly scarfed away so as to fit thereon, as at a. When the parts are assembled, these two scarfed surfaces are held together either by brazing, by rivets r, or in any other desired manner, and said containing-pieces are thus firmly and securely attached to the saw-blade. At the other end each recess is scarfed on both sides, thus forming the projections 1 and 2, with preferably an intervening space between them. The containing-pieceAis correspondingly scarfed on both sides, leaving the projections 3 and 4:, with preferably also an intervening:space between; but the scarfing on the containingpiece is opposite to that on the corresponding end of the recess into which said containingpiece is inserted.
As clearly indicated 011 the drawings, the parts when assembled together interlock without being attached, and are thus securely held in line with each other. The projections are cut a little short of abutting contact with the shoulders on the other part, and so when the tooth-point holder D is driven into place and the containing piece A thus sprung somewhat there is no strain transmitted thereby to the saw-plate. As will also be noticed, there are no rivets or attaching devices at this end, said parts being connected together by their own formation.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination inan insertible-tooth saw, of a plate having recesses to receive toothpoint-containing pieces, one edge of each of said recesses being scarfed away on one face and the other edge being also scarfed away, partly on one face and partly on the other, shoulders being thus formed in said faces near said edges, and tooth-point-containing pieces formed to fit into said recesses and being correspondingly scarfed, whereby their edges are adapted to fit into the scarfs in the edges of said recesses, forming an interlocking connection at one end, suitable means for substantially permanent attachment at the other end, the shoulders of the interlocking scarfed edges being positioned somewhat apart, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in an insertible-tooth' In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this IO 2d day of December, A. D. 1895.
ELIAS o. ATKINS. [11. s.]
