Be it known that I, JOSEPH SENIOR, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at WVakefield, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamps or Lanterns, (for which I have obtained patents in Great Britain, No. 1,602, dated January 27, 1892; in France, No. 240,026, dated July 13, 1894; in Belgium, No, 110,970, dated July 13, 1894, and in Austria, No. 44/3,548, dated July 27, 1894,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to oil lamps or Ianterns. In such lamps or lanterns as heretofore constructed it has been usual to place the oil-reservoir at the bottom of the lantern.
Now one object of my invention is to provide a lamp or lantern having a non-lightobstructing bottom-that is to say, a lamp or lantern in which the light may be projected downward as well as from the sides-and to permit of accomplishing this I arrange the oil-reservoir considerably to one side of the vertical plane of the burner.
Another object of my invention is to obviate the liability of accidents which mightarise owing to the door of the lantern being open, and to effect this I arrange the oil-reservoir with the burner projecting therefrom upon the door, whereby in case the lantern is not properly closed the opening of the door will bring the burner out of the lantern. I prefer to provide the door with a spring-lock, so that when closed it cannot be opened by an unauthorizedperson. The burner is preferably provided :with a drip-flange for preventing any oil from dropping onto the bottom of the lantern, which is made of transparentmaterial, and in orderto permit of regulating the burner-wick without the necessity for opening the lantern I arrange, in combination with the wickraising wheel, worm-gearing operated from the outside of the lantern.
To enable my invention to be fully understood, I will describe the same by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lantern constructed according to myinvention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 8, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a part horizontal section similar to Fig. 8, but showing the door of the lantern open.

Although I have shown my lantern as being arranged in conjunction with a burner for colza or similar oil, it will be readily understood that the construction of the burner may be modifiedin order to adapt it forhurning hydrocarbon oils.
Having now particularly described and asdoor, and a burner in a different Vertical certained the nature of my said invention and plane from said reservoir, substantially as in what manner the same is to be performed, described.
