STREET-RAILWAY SWITCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,462, dated May 19, v1896. Applicationviled December 12, 1895. Serial No. 571,931.` (No model.)

Bc it known that I, BION BEAR, of Dayton, county of Montgomery, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Street-RailwaySwitches5 and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in street-railway switches.
The object of said invention is to provide a manually-operative switch that is simple in its construction and reliable in its operation, as will more fully appear from the following specification.
Of the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of an end of a car upon a track. One of the switchlevers is shown lowered to trip theV switchcain. Fig. 2 is a top view showing a main and diverging track having my switch-shifting devices attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 0c of Fig. 2 Fig. 4, a section on the line y y of Fig. 3.
In the detailed description to follow simi-lar letters of reference will be used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
A designates an inclosing case or box lying between frogs b of main and diverging tracks c and CZ. The cover or top plate e of this case is on a level with the surface of the ground.
f designates an opening in the bottom of the case for drainage.
g is a shaft journaled in a vertical position in the top and bottom of the case, upon the lower part of which there is rigidly attached an eccentric plate h.
c' designates a tripping-plate rigidly mounted on the upper end of the shaft g on the outside of the case. When mounted, this plate i should occupy a position on a level with the rails and should be of a thickness to enable contact to be made therewith, as will pres ently be described.
j designates a horizontal bar eccentrically connected to the plate h, and on the outer end of which there is a pin k, that projects through a slot in the cover of the case and is connected to the switch-tongue m.
n and n' designate two bars which are pivoted at n to the truck-frame. These bars project under the central part of the platform.
0 designates a guide for said bars n and n, which is rigidly attached to the bottom of the car-platform.
o' designates a roller mounted on each of the bars n and n. These rollers have a swiveling attachment with said bars, and therefore readily yield to the inclinations of thc track. The object of these rollers is to support the ends of the bars or levers n and n and to maintain them out of contact with the ground, which is very essential, owing to the flexible nature of the connection between said bars andthe upright hand-levers. The swiveling connection of said rollers with the bars is such that permits them to freely turn as the car passes around a curve.
q and q' designate upright hand-levers pivoted at r, and s s/ are connecting-links pivoted to the bars n and n and to the levers q and q. By means of these levers the bars 'nl and a are raised or lowered in the path of the proj ect-ing ends L" of the plate 1T. Accordingly as the plate c' is tripped in either direction, as indicated by the arrows, the switchtongue m is shifted to open the main or diverging track. The depending guide o is mounted in a :manner to insure each bar n or 'n' coming in contact with one or the other of the points t. The weight of said bars serves to maintain the rollers 0 in contact with the track when said bars are lowered to trip the switch-plate 1'. By providing the pivotal links s and s', between the levers q and q and the bars n and n', the jolting of the car will not interfere with the correct position of said levers when they are lowered, as the said links readily yield and permit said levers to iind their position. As shown in Fig. 2, the switch devices are in a position to be tripped by a car going in the direction of the arrow only, but the said devices may also be placed in a position to be operated by cars approaching from au opposite direction by reversing the connections of the shaft g and the bar j with the plate 71..
