UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMBROSE H. KITE, OF STILLXVATER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO F. M. STALLARD, OF SAME PLACE.
POST-AUGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,267, dated May 19, 1896.
Application filed December 5, 1895. Serial No. 572,811. (No model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBROSE H. KITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stillwater, in the county of Payne and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Post-Auger, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in post-angers, which in taking the core of the post-hole out in a solid piece, saves labor and time.
I have attempted to explain the mechanism of my invention in the accompanying drawings. v
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the auger complete. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the auger, showing outside cutting-knives and a part of the core-drum and the core-knives; also the guide-wheel that holds the auger in position while starting the hole.-
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views.
The wood handle at a a passes through a hollow piece which connects with pipe 0. Pipe 0 connects with piece 19 p and p 19 connects with piece k 70, that passes down to and. fastens to the core-drum t. The object of using gas-pipe is to give strength and prevent weight and lessen the cost of manufacture.
d d in Fig. 1 represent buttons or thumbbolts connected with small steel rods t t, the ends of which are flattened out and form coreknives i 1'. (Shown in bottom section, Fig. 2.)
By turning buttons cl d the operator will be able to throw out the knives e 6. Then by turning the auger one-fourth around to the left the knives will occupy the position shown by dotted lines.
Z Z in Fig. 2 represent outside cutting-knives.
Zin Fig. 2 shows end section of core-drum.
h it shows the guide that holds the auger when starting.
erepresents center rod or a part of the guide which stays in a stationary position while operating the auger.
g g in Fig. 1 is a cross-bar that slides within the core-drum and holds the rod e in position. I
Rod 6 passes up through pipe 0 as the auger AMBROSE H. KITE.
