No. 560,236. Patented May 19, 1896.
Pu mdE ANDREW BVGRAHAM. PHoTc-LFNQWASHINGI'DHJ c LII UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORUTCHER DUTY SHEPHERD, OF ORLANDO, FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- TVELETH TO D. F. VILLIAMSON, OF SAME PLACE.
DUST-DEFLECTOR FOR CAR-WINDOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,236, dated May 19, 1896. Application filed August 23, 1895. Serial No. 560.262. (N model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GRUTCHEP. DUTY SHEP- HERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orlando, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Dust-Deflector for Oar-Windows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dust-deflectors and ventilators for car-windows and the object of my invention is to provide a device that shall be simple, cheap, neat, durable, and which may be readily adaptable to different windows, and may be either flXQCl or removable.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. I} is a horizontal section through the lower half. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective, showing the top and upper rear portion. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view through the upper pivot.
Referring now to the details of construction, 1 designates the back panel of an open deflector-casing. This panel is curved outwardly at its sides and is provided at either extremity with inclosing ends 2 and 3, outwardly projecting in a segmental edge to provide bearing extensions for the deflector &. This deflector 1 is of such a length that it may fit loosely between the ends 2 and 3 of the back panel 1, and is provided centrally at either end with asuitable pivot-post 5, which is provided at its inner end with a fixed bearingdisk 6, adapted to rest in facial contact against a correspondingly-formed boss 7, fixed on the inner side of either end 2 Each boss '7 is centrally perforated in alineinent with a similar perforation in the adjacent frame end to provide a pivotbearing to receive post 5, said post being provided at its extremity with a suitable head 8, adapted to bear against the outersurface of the frame end to rigidly brace said pivot while permitting free pivotal action of deflector 4:. Said deflector is limited in its movements by stops 9, which may be j metal, rubber, or other suitable material, and
which are so placed to project from the inner face of ends 2 and 3 as to cause a narrow draft slot or aperture to remain between the adjacent parallel edges of the curved deflector i and back panel 1 for the purpose of deflecting the gathered cinders and smoke, as
more fully set forth hereinafter. On the inner face of back panel 1 a plurality of loops 12 are fixed to receive the adj usting slide-bars 13, by which the side wings 14 are adjusted in and out laterally. Each of these wings 14 is two inches, or thereabout,
shorter than said panel, and consists of a swinging leaf 15, having a limited lateral movement, and a sliding strip 16, suitably 6o hinged together at 17. The slide-bars 13 are respectively soldered or otherwise secured at their outer ends to lie across strips 16, and are provided at their inner ends with upturned flanges to limit outward movement by coming into contact with loops 12. These slide-bars and wings are curved to lie snugly against the curved back panel. A notch 18, strengthened bya rib 19 across its lowerportion, is provided in the upper end of either flanges, and, if desired, stiffening-wires may be inserted therein.
My improved dust-deflector is adjusted against the outside car-panel between two car-windows by seating bottom end 2 against the bead 24, usually extending across the panels in line with the outer edges of the window-sill. It is either temporarily or permanently fastened in place by means of hooks or screws engaging said bead or the panel itself through holes 22, secured against the panel or side of the car by similar means engaging said panel through the holes 21 in ear 20. The deflector is arranged vertically midway between the two adjacent windows.
In operation, when a passenger desires to have the car-window up, he raises the lower sash, and slides the adjacent wing laterally till leaf 15 comes within the windowjamb.
He then swings open the leaf 15 and engages Similar holes 22 are 7 5 and its upper end is 0 its notch 18 with the under edge of the raised sash in close contact against the windowj amb to exclude all dust and cinders at that point. The wing and leaf thereof on the other side of the deflector are correspondingly adjusted in the front window under its sash. This excludes all cinders, &c., from collecting behind the deflector. The impact of the wind turns deflector l on its end pivots so as to bring the windward edge of said deflector outward. The opposite edge at the same time strikes stops 9, so as to form draft-slot 10. In this position deflector & catches all cinders, dust, and smoke by means of its outturned edge. Said cinders, &c., are then sucked out and deflected away through the outcurved lips of slot 10 by means of the rush of air which is collected by the wide-open deflector and forced through the narrow draft-aperture 10.
This dust-deflector may be constructed of any material. It may be built into the sides of new cars, exposing only such parts of the device as may be requisite for its operation; or it maybe fixed permanently to old cars or used asa portable device to be set over pins or hooks provided in proper adjustment to receive it.
Various changes in form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In a dust-deflector for car-windows, an open casin g adapted to be supported between two adjacent car-windows and provided at its opposite side edges with wings adapted to en gage under the raised sashes, and a self-adjusting deflector pivotally mounted within said casing between the side wings thereof, substantially as set forth.
:2. In a d List-deflector for car-windows, the combination with a deflector, of a wing hinged to the rear thereof adapted to engage the raised window-sash adjacent to the windowcasing, whereby dust and cinders are prevented from entering the car-window at the rear of said deflector, substantially as described.
3. In a dust-deflector for car-windows, the combination with a deflector, of hinged wings mounted for a sliding adjustment at the rear thereof, one at either side, adapted to engage the raised window-sash adjacent to the window-casing, whereby dust and einders are prevented from entering the car-window at the rear of said deflector, substantially as described.
4:. In a dust-deflector for car-windows, the combination with a deflector, of two wings hinged to the rear thereof, one at either side, adapted to engage the raised window-sash adj acent to the window-casing,and transverselyextending slide-bars connecting said wings to the deflector for purposes of adjustment to said window-casings, whereby dust and cinders are prevented from entering the carwindow at the rear of said deflector, substantially as described.
5. In a dust-deflector, the combination with a deflector, of two wings hinged to the rear thereof, one at either side, each wing being provided at its upper end with a notch adapted to engage the raised window-sash adjacent to the window-casing, whereby dust and cinders are prevented from entering the window at the rear of said deflector, substantially as described.
6. In a dust-deflector for car-windows, the combination with an open casing having a back panel outwardly curved at its sides and provided with upturned ends projecting out wardly, of a curved deflector pivoted centrally at either end in the respective frame ends, for lateral oscillatory movement, limiting-stops projecting inwardly from either frame end for limiting the inward swing of said deflector, whereby a narrow draft-slot is formed between the adjacent edges of said deflector and back panel, and wings provided one 011 either side of the rear face of said back panel, adapted by means of hinges to swing laterally, and provided with trans versely-extending slide-bars working in suitable loops attached to the rear face of said back panel for separating or retracting said wings, and suitable fastening means provided at the top and bottom of said frame, all arranged so that all cinders and ashes are caught in the path of the car-window and deflected from entering the car, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CRUTCIIER DU"Y SHEPHERD.
