Description

.ver
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
ROBERT OONAEEOE, OE GAMDEN, O EIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANE STRIPPER AND KNIFE COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 56,009, dated July 3, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT CONARROE, of Camden, in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have made a new and useful Gane Knife and Stripper; and I do hereby declare. the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, sufficient to enable one skilledin the art to which my invention is allied to oonstruct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which is made part of this specification.
The improvement consists in the application to the cane-knife of a pivoted stripper with a strengthening-guard and a forked end to straddle the knife-blade, the tool thus constructed affording the means within a convenient size for cutting the cane and for stripping the leaves therefrom previous to grinding, for trimming and blading the corn at the mill previous to grinding, or for stripping the blades from the standing cane and subsequently cutting the stalk.
dle, in which is pivoted the jaw D. One end of the said jaw has a handle, d, and the other end has a semicircular griper, d', which, in connection with the corresponding circular depression in the edge of the blade B, forms a throat, through which the cane is passed to strip off the blades from the cane.
The action of the knife cannot need explicit description, as it is not peculiar.
The action of the stripper is as follows: Pressure being placed upon the handle d of the jaw D, the griper df is opened and the cane inclosed between the griper andthe blade, the
jaw appearingas in the red lines and the spring f being depressed. The jaw in opening traverses in the guide or guard E, which gives it lateral support. The jaw being then released, the spring closes the griper, so that the forked ends w pass on each side of the blade, insuring the entire circle and preventing the intrusion of the blade between the end of the griping-jaw and the edge of the knife.
Having described myinvention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cane knife and stripper consisting of a handle-blade provided with a spring gripingjaw, Which is supported by the guard E, and combined with the blade by means of the forked ends w, substantially as described and represented.
