SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,027, dated May 12. 1896.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDGAR FRIEDMAN and GUSTAV REINHARD PAUL ENGERT, citizens of the United States, residing at Dobbs Ferry, county of lVestchester, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel or Package Registers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to simplify and perfect that class of registering devices which are adapted to automatically register the size and number of packages, such as barrels or kegs, as they are conveyed along a track or skid.
Our improvements make it possible to register the packages passing in either direction, and as the operating-arm is moved into and out of operative position by the passing package it is perfectly accurate, there being no chance of any subsequent movement or vibration of the operating-arm affecting the registering mechanism.
In order that our invention may be fully understood, we will first describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawin gs and afterward point out the novelty with more particularity in the annexed claims.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved device, representing a series of kegs in position on a skid to pass under the operating part of the register. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation showing the device in operation and representing the circuits of the electrical registers. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device, showing the track in section. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view taken on the line a 4: of Figs. 1, 2, and 8. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail front elevation of the transversely-movable shaft carrying the operating-arm. Fig. 6 represents in detail a mechanical register adapted to be operated by our improved device.
1 is a conveyor or skid upon which barrels or packages 2 of various shapes and sizes are adapted to be rolled or otherwise propelled along.

10 is an auxiliary oblong frame open at its lower end and having hollow side bars in which are formed the vertical guideways or slots 11. (Shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2.) In the ways 11 are supported the sliding brackets 12, from which extend the rods 13. The rods 13 pass longitudinally through the hollow side bars of the auxiliary frame 10 and project through guide-openin gs in the top bar of said frame.

15 is a cross-shaft supported rigidly between the brackets 12, as seen in Figs. 8 and 4, adj acent to the lower end of the auxiliary frame 10 and adapted to move transverselythat is, toward and away from the skidcarrying with it the brackets 12, which slide 1'11 guideways 11.
16 are wheels or rollers journaled upon the shaft 15, with which the barrels or other packages 2 come in contact for moving the shaft 15 and its brackets in the frame, raising the operatingarm 20, which operates and con trols the register-controlling devices.
20 is the operating-arm, pivoted upon the shaft 15 and formed with an enlarged weighted lower end 21, which is bifurcated or formed with a central cavity or recess 22 for the passage of the bungs of the barrels, and has journaled in the arms on each side of the recess 22 the small rollers The upper end of the lever 20 is formed with oppositely-projecting fingers 20, adapted to contact with the push-buttons presently to be referred to.

26 are small springs secured to the lower face of the plate 24: and having their ends bearing in the grooves 27, formed in the lower end of the operating-lever 20. The springs 26 and the weight of the lower end on lever 20 tend to hold it centrally in the slot of plate 24.
30 are plates supported at the outer ends of bars 31, extending from the auxiliary frame 10, and 32 are push-buttons or electric contacts in electrical circuit with the registers It will be observed, from Fig. 2 of the drawings, that we have arranged two sets or series of any desired numberof push-buttons or electric contacts in vertical alinement, both sets controlling the same series of electrical registers and one set being on each side of the operating-arm in position to be actuated thereby when the package passes in one or the other direction.
The auxiliary frame 10, carrying the electric contacts 32 and shiftable operating-arm 20, is pivoted adjacent to its upper end upon the bolts 35, to enable it to be swung to either side of the standards 5 and be secured in inclined position, as shown in the drawings, by means of the removable bolts 36, which are adapted to enter holes 37 in the standards 5 and engage the auxiliary frame. It is preferable to have the auxiliary frame inclined slightly toward the package which is approaching to be registered, as the device will be more easily operated in this position; but we do not limit ourselves to the device supported in this position.
I11 Fig. 0 we have shown a modification in which a series of spring-arms 40 are pivotally mounted upon a rod 41 and connected with the 1nechanically-operated registers 42 through the rods43. The arms iO are adapted to be supported upon the plates 30 of the auxiliary pivoted frame 10, and may be formed with projecting heels 4A, which are designed to assume the same relative position as the contacts 32, so as to be operated in a similar manner by the operating-arm 20.
It will be seen that when the package rolls up under the device it will come in contact with the wheels 16 and raise or move transversely the shaft 15, with brackets 12 in the guideways 11, carrying with it the pivoted actuatingarm 20. As soon as the device completes its upward movement under theaction of the package-that is, has moved it as far as the size of the package requires to pass the small rollers 23 are struck by the passing package, which will cause the arm 20 to move on the shaft and strike one of the contacts 30 controlling the register which registers the barrel or package of the size which is passing. As soon as the package has passed the springs 14 will immediately return the shaft 15 to its lower position and the spring 26 will cause the arm 20 to assume its central position. It will be observed that the larger the package the higher the device will be raised to register, and as it is necessary for the device to be elevated into position to actuate the contact-points or register-controlling devices it will be impossible for any vibration or swinging of the arm 20 on the shaft 15 to affect the register.
The push-buttons or contacts on the opposite sides of the auxiliary frame are arranged to register the barrels or packages from opposite directions, the arm 20 under the'action of the passing package operating upon the register-controlling device on the side from which the package comes. Itis necessary to provide as many registers as the number of different-sized packages to be registered, and of course the requisite number of push-buttons or controlling devices are arranged in vertical alinement and properly connected to the corresponding registers.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a barrel or package register, the combination of a track or way for the passage of the packages, an arm or lever pivoted in the path of the packages and adapted to be operated by their passage in either direction, a register, and two register-controlling devices arranged one on each side of the lever both being in position to be operated independently for actuating the register by the single arm or lever, according to the direction of the passing package, whereby packages can be registered in both directions by the single arm or lever, substantially as set forth.
2. In a barrel or package register, the co1nbination of a track orway for the passage of the packages, a pivoted arm or lever movably supported in the path of the packages and adapted to be operated by their passage in either direction, a series of registering devices, two sets or series of register-controlling devices arranged one set or series 011 each side of the arm or lever and adapted to be independently operated by it, and means operated by the packages for shifting the movable arm to the position for actuating the proper operating device, substantially as set forth.
3. In a barrel or package register, the combination of a supporting-frame, the auxiliary frame j ournaled therein, a registering device, a register-controlling device mounted on the auxiliary frame, a pivoted arm also mounted on the auxiliary frame and adapted to actuate the controlling device, and means for supporting the auxiliary frame at an angle to either side of the supporting-frame, substantially as set forth.
4. In a barrel or package register, the com bination of a track or way for the passage of the packages in either direction, the support ing-frame, the auxiliary frame journaled in the supporting-frame, a registering device, register-controlling devices carried by the auxiliary frame, an arm pivotally supported in the auxiliary frame in the path of the packages, and removable pins supported in suitable openings in the supporting-frame and adapted to engage the auxiliary frame for holding it in inclined position to either side, substantially as set forth.
5. In a barrel or package register, the combination of a track or way for the passage of the packages, a registering device, a controlling device for said register, a movable part lying in the path of the packages, and a part pivoted to the first part and also lying in the path of the packages and adapted to actuate the controlling device after being shifted into position by the first part, substantially as set forth.
6. In a barrel or package register, the combination of a series of registering devices, a series of controlling devices for said registerin g devices, a way or track for the barrels or packages, a part lying in the path of the packages and mounted so as to be shiftable out of the path of packages over said Way or track, and a part pivoted on said first part and lying in the path of said packages and adapted to actuate the controlling devices of the registering devices after it is shifted bodily with the first part, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination of a suitable support provided with guideways, the shaft or bar slidingly supported in the guideways and carrying Wheels or rollers, the pivoted lever mounted on said shaft or bar and also carrying roller or rollers, and the registering de vice operated by said lever, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination with a way or track for barrels or other-packages, of the transverselymoving shaft or bar adapted to be operated by a moving barrel or package, a pivoted lever mounted thereon over said Way or track and adapted to be struck by a moving package, the series of electric circuits having independent electric registers, and the several independent contact devices, in said circuits adapted to be operated by said lever, substantially as set forth.
0. The combination with a Way or track for barrels or other packages, of the supportingframe formed with guideways, the shaft or bar having bearings at its ends working in said guideways, springs for holding the bar in normal position therein, rollers journaled on the bar, an arm pivoted to said bar and adapted to be operated upon by a passing package, a register, and a register-controlling device adapted to be actuated by said arm, substantially as set forth.
10. The combination of a track or Way for packages, a transversely -movable shaft or bar supported adjacent thereto, and adapted to be actuated by passing packages, an arm pivoted to the shaft, a centering spring or springs for retaining the arm in position, a register, and a register-controlling device actuated by the arm, substantially as set forth.
11. The combination of a track or Way for packages, a transversely-movable shaft or bar supported adjacent thereto and adapted to be moved by passing packages, a pivoted arm carried by the shaft and formed with a bifurcated lower end, rollers journaled in the bifurcated portions, springs supported from the shaft and engaging the arm on opposite sides for holding it normally in central position, a register, and a register-controlling device actuated by the pivoted arm, as set forth.
12. In a barrel or package register, the combination of a track or Way, a supporting-frame extending above the track, an auxiliary frame j ournaled in the supporting-frame and formed With guideways, the shaft or bar having bearings at its ends which Work in said guide- Ways, rods extending from said bearings, springs surrounding said rods and tending to hold the shaft or bar in normal position, an arm journaled to the shaft or bar, and a registering device operated by said arm, as set forth.
