PUMP.
SPECIFCATION forming part of Letters ?atent No. 559,851, dated May 12, 1896.
Application ll August 19,1892. Serial No. 443,522. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN II. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specifi cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showingthe pump in position on a suitable support.
This invention relates to pumps, particularly that class of pumps commonly used in pumping water for household purposes and which are designed to be secured to a wall or other support.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved construction whereby the piston-rod and stuiiingbox may be readily r'emoved and replaced and the pump-handle can be swung to diierent positions, so that it can be moved out of the way when not in use, but can be conveniently operated whenever desired. This object is accomplished in the manner and by the means hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, the numeral 1 indicates a wall or other suitable support.
2 indicates the pump-cylinder supported by a. holder or clamp mounted on the lower end portion of a plate 3, adapted to be attached to the wall 1.
l indicates a pump-rod of the usual description, adapted to be longitudinally reciprocated with reference to the cylinder 2. The rod i is provided with a transverse slot 5, as best shown in Fig.
(3 indicates a support composed of a lug carried by the plate 3 and projecting therefrom.
7 indicates a cap screwed vupon the upper end of the cylinder 2, which cap is constructed with a peripheral rabbet or groove and earries a stufing-box S, through which passes the rod 1, as shown in Fig. 2.
9 indicates a bracket, which constitutes a pump-handle support and is constructed at its lower end with a horizontal annulus seated in the peripheral rabbet or groove of the cap 7, the diameter of this annulus being such as to permit the ready removal of the piston-rod and stufng-box and the replacing of the same without detaching said parts. The upper portion of the bracket 9 is provided with an annular flange 10, adapted to iit into a socket in the support G and to rotate therein. The upper portion of the bracket 9 is provided With a bearing, through which passes the upper portion of the rod 11, as shown. The central portion of the bracket 9 is provided with a slot 11, as shown in Fig. 1, through which slot passes a handle 12. handle 12 is pivoted in the slot 11 of the bracket 9, and its upper end projects toward the rod l and is bifurcated to receive the rod at. The handle 12 is connected to the rod l by means of a pin 13, which passes through the slot 5, and is connected to the arms at the upper portion of the handle 12. By this construction when it is desired to operate the pump by seizing the handle 12 and drawing it away from the Wall the bracket 9 will rotate upon its bearings, swinging the handle outward.
That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a pump, the combination, with the cylinder and piston-rod thereof, said cylinder provided with a cap having a peripheral rabbet or groove, of a swiveled pump-handlesupporting bracket, having its upper end journaled in a suitable bearing and its lower end formed with a horizontal annulus, adapted to be seated in the peripheral rabbet of said cap, the diameter of said annulus being such as to allow for the removal of the piston-rod and stuffing-box, and the replacing of the same, without detaching said parts, substantially as described.
