MOLD USED IN CASTING METALLIC BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,785, dated May 5, 1896.

To czZl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER H. MELLON, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Molds Used in Casting Metallic .lSeds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a convenient frame which is formed in two parts hinged together and pivotally supported on standards. The frames are adapted to hold the metallic bars of the end pieces of the bed securely in place, while the metal may be poured into the molds about the joints thereof in order that the same may be fastened together.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate in y invention, Figure I is a perspective view of the entire device. Fig. II is a plan view showing the bars placed in position on the frame which carries the molds. Fig. III shows an end piece after the bars have been secured by the castings.
1 and 2 are the standards which support the frames and which are suitably secured to the floor by means of plates 3.
l and 5 are side bars of one part of the frame which carry the drags of the molds, and they are connected with each other at their ends by means of the bars 6 and '7. Midway on the bars 6 and 7 are secured pins 8 and 9, which cngageifihooks on the stand ards, so that the frame can be revolved, for a purpose hereinafter described. Hinged to the right end of bars 4 and 5 are two other similar bars 10 and 11, whose outer or free ends are connected with a cross-piece 12. A detachable hook 13 engages a hole in this bar 12 and is secured to a counterbalancingweight 11 by means of a rope 15. This rope passes over a pulley attached to the end of the standard 1. The side pieces 4 and 10 carry molds 18 and 17, the drag being secured to bar a and the cope 10 being secured to the bar 10, while the bars 5 and 11 carry similar molds, whose parts are arranged in the same manner and relation to each other. These molds on both sides of the frame are of two sizes, the larger 16 being for the posts of the end pieces and the smaller 17 being for the rods 2]..

The device is operated as follows: The posts 20 are laid in the drags of the molds, the lower frame being in a horizontal position with the hinged frame raised, as shown. The rods 21, previously cut to a proper length, are then laid in the drags 17, and the rods 22 and are placed at right angles thereto, channels being provided in the drags therefor. The upper portion of the frame, carryingthe copes l6 and 17, which has been held in its elevated position by means of the weight 14, is now lowered and secured to the lower frame by means of the ordinary clamp, and the detachable hook 13 is released. The device is next swung to a vertical position about the pivots 8 and 9, and the molten metal is then poured into the gates 18 and 19 of the molds l6 and 17 on one side of the end piece.
