To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES WV. BUOKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Distributing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for depositing the desired quantity of sand upon a track-rail to increase the traction of the car-wheels thereon.
The invention consists in a novel arrangement of valve mechanism to be used in connection with a hopper or sand-receptacle, the valve being so arranged that when opened it will allow the delivery of sand, but when closed will prevent the escape of any particles of sand.
To this end the invention comprises a hopper or sandreceptacle, a valve box or receptacle beneath it, and a valve consisting of an oscillatory plate closing the lower opening of said box and having a coupling for connection with a delivery-pipe. Means are also provided for holding said plate in such position that said coupling will normally be out of line with the opening in said valve-box and other means for operating said plate at will to allow the escape of sand.
The invention also consists in means for directing the delivery of sand upon the carrail at all. times and under varying condi tions.
The invention also consists in the novel details of improvement and the combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a partly sectional side elevation of a portion of a car, showing my improvements in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a plan view, enlarged, of the improved valve mechanism. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. at is an under side View thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, the number 1 indicates the car-body, 2 is its floor, 3
is the platform, at is the dashboard, 5 is the platform-knee, and 6 is a sill, all of which may be of suitable construction.
7 is a hopper or other suitable sand-receptacle carried within the car on its floor 2, said hopper or receptacle 7 having a lower opening for the exit of the sand, said opening leading to my improved valve-box S, as in Fig. 1.
The upper end of the valve-box 8 fits in an opening 2 in the floor 2, and for simplicity and convenience of attachment said box is provided with side lugs 9 9, which are below the upper surface of the box, so as to rest against the under surface of the floor 2, while the upper edge of said boX comes about flush with the top of said floor, said lugs being bolted or screwed to the floor. Three of such lugs 9 are shown, which allow one side of the valve-box S to come flush with the side wall of the car.
The valve arrangement is constructed as follows: Around the upper edge of the central opening of the box 8 is an upwardlyextending flange 10, which passes into the lower opening of the hopper or receptacle '7 to make a tight fit for the latter. (See Fig. 1.) The central opening of the box 8 is preferably rectangular, and in order to properly guide the sand to the lower outlet the sides and corners of said opening are beveled inwardly and downwardly, two corners having triangular projecting Walls 11, which are joined by an intermediate triangular wall 12. The wall 13 is downwardly extending, having a rounded lower edge; but the interior of the box 8 may be arranged in suitable manner.
The box 8 at its lower part has a plate or frame 14, which extends outwardly, as in Fig. 2, having two sides 15, arranged at an acute angle, and the side 16, arranged in the arc of a circle described around a pivot 17.

In the normal position of the plate 18 its opening 21 and the coupling 22 are out of line with the opening in the bottom of the box 8, and when it is desired to drop sand the plate 18 is drawn around to aline its opening 21 withthe opening in the bottom of the box. The plate 18 is held in the normally-closed position by means of a suitably-arranged I have shown a'spring .28, which is coiled on a rod 29, that is curved on thearc of circle-described around the pivot 17, said rod being supported by lugs 30'and 31, depending from the plate 14. The lug 30 passes through an opening 32 in the plate 18, so that said plate can have free oscillatory movement. (See Fig. at.) The plate 18 carries a lug 33, which has an opening to receive the rod 29, so that said lug can slide along said rod as the plate 18 turns on its pivot, and the spring 28 bears at one end against the lug 30 and at its other end against the lug 33, the tendency of the spring 28 being to keep the plate 18 in the normally-closed position and to return it to said position after the plate 18 has been operated by the lever or bar 27.
The hose or tube 2-1, which is preferably flexible, allows of the various movements of the plate 18, and the tube 24 at its lower end is guided to lie over the rail 3% by a suitable guide-bar 35 carried by the ear. Thisguidebar 35 has at one end an opening for the passage of the hose or tube 24:, said guide-bar extending" down near the rail 34: to properly guide the lower end of the hose or tube 24. The guide-bar 35 is shown bolted at its upper end to a cross-beam 36 of the car, and said bar is also preferably made adjustable for adjusting the end of the hose or tube 24 in different positions. For this purpose the guide-bar 35. may be made in two parts 35 35", jointed together at 37, the part 35 havin g a horizontal bend 35 to hold thepart 35 and pivot-bolt 37. By adjusting the part 35 laterally and securing it by the pivot-bolt 37 the lower end of the hose or tube 21L can be properly adjusted over the ear-rail 3i. 7
Having now described myinvention, what I claim is 1.- The combination with a hopper, of a sand box having an open bottom, and a plate oscillating horizontally beneath said opening,
said plate being provided with an aperture and a chute, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a hopper, of a sandbox having an open bottom, and a plate oscillating horizontally beneath said opening in a direction substantially parallelwith the line of travel of the car, said plate being providedwith an aperture and a chute leading therefrom, substantially as described.

Avalve-box havin g-an opening combined with an oscillatory plate pivotally connected with said box and having an aperture and a coupling secured to and movable with said plate and alined with said aperture, and with a rod connected with said plate, and means connected with said rod to operate the latter, substantially as described.
