J. G. PEACE. PLANT PROTECTOR.
( Patented May 5, 1896.
I 7 avwewboz z Jai? a a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OHN G. PEACE, OF MICANOPIQFLORIDA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ZACIIARIAH C. OHAMBLISS, OF OOALA, FLORIDA.
PLANT- PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,597, dated May 5, 1896.
Application filed September 5, 1895. Serial No. 561 ,581. (No model.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. PEACE, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Mieanopy, Alachna county, State of Florida, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Plant-Protectors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invent-ion relates to that class of plantprotectors employed to shield young and tender plants from cold and frost and the injurious effects of too strong sunshine and wind, and it is the object of my invention to produce an inexpensive, efiicient, and light article of the kind, which, when once seated over the plant, is not liable to displacement by strong winds, as the lower corners of the protector penetrate the ground; further, an article which can be packed together into a small compass, either nested or knockdown, for the purpose of transportation.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I illustrates the blank from which the protector is formed. Fig. II is an end view of the protector. Fig. III is a side view, a portion of the side being broken away and one of the ends being shown in vertical section. Fig. IV is a perspective view of the protector illustrated as in use. Fig. V is a detail section showing the means of fastening the protector together when folded. Fig.
' VI illustrates a modified form of blank.
on the lines 5 to form the end sections 6.
In forming the protector the blank is folded on the scored line 3 and on the lines 5, and the outer ends of the side sections 4: are bent toward each other, and the end sections are bent inward by folding on the scored line 5, with the inner end of one of said end sections at each end of the blank overlapping the adjacent end section. The sides are thus bent toward each other, until each of the two underlying end sections comes in contact with the under surface of the oppositely-disposed side section 4, when the fastener 7 is inserted and the protector is complete. A plant-protector so made is very eflicient, inasmuch as it completely shields the plant from above and at the same time permits sufficient air to enter beneath the sides and ends of the protector, and owing to its lightness there is no danger of injury from pressure on the plant.
In the modification shown in Fig. VI, 1 designates the blank, and 2 gore shaped openings employed in place of the slits 2 in the main form. 3 designates the central scored line, 4 the side sections, and 5 the side scored lines. 6 designates the end sections. In the employment of this form of blank I am enabled to form a protector which has advantages in the matter of shipping and storing, owing to the facility with which the protectors may be nested, and it also enables me to make the device taller without changing the dimension of the base, which is necessary for the covering of taller varieties of plants, tomatoes, egg-plant, &c.
I claim as my invention- 1. A rectangular blank for plant-protectors formed in one piece having single centrally located slits extending inwardly from opposite sides, scoring extending from slit to slit, providing side sections and scoring extending from the inner ends of the slits across the side sections providing end sections on the side sections 5 substantially as described.
2. A plant-protector formed in one piece from a centrally-folded rectangular blank with side sections, and with folded end sections on the side sections, and a fastening device whereby the end sections are secured together at their overlapping portions, the free portions of the end sections providing corners which penetrate the ground; substantially as described.
JOHN G. PEACE.
In presence of- J. W. SMITH, S. F. SMITH.
