Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo I-IVIPROVED APPARATUS FOR OILING JOURNALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No: 55,938, dated June 26, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JAMES E. WEAVER, of Teinperanceville, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Oilin g Journals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
rlhe nature of my invention consists in the use of a vessel4 furnished with tubes and so arranged with relation to the journal that said journal can be oiled at will, or lubricated or oiled by a continual flow of oil.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use myinvent-ion, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, A and B represent au ordinary plumber-block or bearing ier shafting. g and h represent bolts and Vnuts used for holding the two parts of the pli'nnber-block together. j represents the shaft or journal. 7c represents a pan for catching waste oil. i represents a block of wood, which is secured on the cap of the plumber-block. Upon the wooden block z' is a vessel, C, which is furnished with two pipes, d and e, and a stopper, marked 2. The pipe marked e extends down in the vessel G, near to its bottom, and one end of the pipe is placed in an opening, marked x, in the cap B of the plumber-block, and is furnished with an air-valve, marked 1. The vessel (l should be elevated, and pipe e so arranged that it acts as a Siphon for drawing' oil from vessel C and conveying it to the journal j.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: Having all things arranged and constructed as described and represented, I remove the stopper 2, and put the desired quantity of oil in the vessel G, and replace the stopper 2. I then force air through pipe d, as shown by the arrows 4, which will force oil out through the pipe e to the journal, as indicated by the arrows marked 3. When I do not want the pipe e to act as a siphon I open the valve l.
What I claim-as of my invention is The combination of the vessel C and pipes d and e with a plumber-block or bearing of shaftin g, as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES E. VEAVER.
