CONTROLLING DEVICE FORBOTTLED LIQUORS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 558,280, dated April 14, 1896. Application filerl'August 22,1895. Serial No. 560,106. (No model.)

To all whom itmay concern.-

Be it known that LTEEODORE HOLLANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Controlling Devices for Bottled Liquors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved device for controlling the sale of bottled liquors, patent medicines, uc. whereby in a very simple manner the origin of the liquid and the genuineness of the same are readily controlled inasimple, cheap, and effective manner; and the invention consists of a controlling device for bottled liquids which consists of two parallel main pieces which are pasted to the bottle and of a number of transverse strips or coupons which are separated by transverse slits and perforated at the ends, so as to be readily detached from the main strips as the liquid is gradually dispensed from the bottle.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a bottle provided with my improved controlling device for the liquid in the same, said bottle being partly empty and some of the detachable strips or coupons removed from the bottle down to the level of the liquid; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, of the front portion of the bottle and the controlling device on the same.

In the drawings, A represents a bottle which contains a superior grade of alcoholic liquors,

patent medicines, or other liquid. To one side of the bottle is applied a controlling device B, which is preferably made of paper or other suitable material, that is formed of parallel main strips a a and transverse strips or coupons b between said main strips, which coupons are separated from each other by parallel slits and provided with perforations at the ends, so as to be readily detached from the main strips at their points of connection with the same, as shown in Fig. 1.

As the liquid in the bottle is successively I poured out the detachable strips or coupons are gradually removed, the level of the liquid in the bottle being approximately indicated by the coupons still remaining undetached. The height of the coupons varies slightly, according to the size and shape of the body of the bottle. When the bottle is made tapering toward its lower part, as shown in Fig. l, the height of the coupons has to be slightly increased, so as to provide for the graduallydiminishing shape of the bott en the bottle tapers from the lower toward its upper part, the upper coupons have to be of greater height than the lower coupons, so as to provide for the diminishing width of the bottle.

If desired, the coupons may be collected and a prize be offered for a certain number of the same if returned to the manufacturer of the liquid in the bottle.

The controlling device, with its detachable coupons, forms a distinguishable characteristic by which certain grades of liquids can be successfully advertised and by which the genuineness of the article is readily ascertained, as the public is enabled to distinguish the genuine goods from the spurious ones, especially when pains are taken to remove the coupons from the controlling device as the bottle is gradually emptied. When the coupons are detached and the bottle is filled, (over again,) the absence of the coupons indicates immediately that the liquid in the bottle is not genuine, but spurious, and that a fraud on the public is intended.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A controlling device for bottled liquids of any kind, composed of longitudinal main strips which are attached permanently to the bottle containing said liquids, and with transverse detachable strips or coupons separated by slits from each other and connected by perforated ends with the main strips, substantially as set forth.
