MUSIC HOLDER AND TURNER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,225, datedApril 14, 1896.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM SrEvENsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVhitehall, in the county of lVashington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music Holders and Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to music holders and turners; and the object thereof is to provide an efiective device of this class which may be connected with the piano, organ, or other musical instrument or with a bracket, stand, or other support, a further object being to provide a device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive and which is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved music holder and turner; Fig.2, a plan view thereof; Fig. 3, a side view of one of the frames for supporting the sheets of music, and Fig. 4 an edge view thereof.

In the practice of my invention I provide a base-board or support A,,at the back of which is a vertical board or plate a, and secured to the vertical board or plate a is a wire loop composed of vertical arms 13, which are carried upwardly and curved outwardly, as shown at b, and downwardly, and the lower ends of which are united bya transverse rod 1), and the object of this loop is to provide means for securing the device to a support or attachment of any kind.

Secured to the upper side of the back board or plate a, at each end, are wire loops 0, which are composed of side wires or rods 0 and a top cross wire or rod 0 and within the said back plate or board are similar wire loops D, which are similarly formed, but extend only part way above the back board or plate, and the object of this arrangement is to provide means for holding extra sheets of music which are not in use, said sheets of music being placed between the loops 0 and D, as will be readily understood, the arrangement of said loops being shown in Fig. 2.

The means for turning the music which I employ consist of frames, four of which are shown, and these frames E are composed of a bottom or base plate or bar F, to each end of which are secured upright frames G, be tween which the sheets of music are adapted to be placed, and one end of each of said frames is provided with a depending pin II, which is adapted to pass through a slot h in the base plate or board A, four of said slots being em ployed, one for each frame, and pivotally connected with the bottom of each frame, at or about the middle thereof, is an arm K, which extends outwardly across the base plate or board A and is provided with a depending portion 7;, to which is secured a head or handle 7c.

The slots 75 extend transversely and partially across the bottom or base plate A, and the outer ends thereof communicate with circular openings h and the pins II, with which each of the frames E is provided, have formed thereon heads h, which are adapted to pass through the circular openings 71;, and beneath the pase-plate A is a sliding plate L, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2,) and said sliding plate is provided with a projecting arm M, by which it is operated, and said plate is adapted to close the circular openings 7L2, so as to prevent the disengagement of the frames E from the base-plate.

The upright frames G of which the frames E are composed may be made of wire rigidly secured to the bottom plate F or they may be composed of separate vertical end pieces pivotally connected at the bottom with the bar or plate F and pivotally united at the top by means of a cross-piece, by which movement of the frame G relatively to the other parts is secured, and my invention is not limited to the exact form or construction of these frames or to the form, construction, and arrangement of the other parts of myimproved music holder or support, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be understood that the holder is supported in any desired manner, either in connection with a piano or other musical instrument or on a. frame, stand, or other support, and the separate sheets of music are placed within the frames E, composed of the separate vertical frames G G, and all that is necessary in order to turn said frames and the sheets of music is to take hold of the head or handle 71; of the arm K and pull the same outwardly, at the same time gently pressing in the direction in which it is desired to turn the frame or the sheet of music held therein. One of these frames is shown in Fig. 2 in full lines in the act of being turned, and it will be understood that any desired number of these frames may be employed, it being also understood that one of the slots h must be employed for each frame.

My improved music holder and turner is simple in construction and operation, and also well adapted to serve the purpose for which it is intended; and,

Having fully described my invention, its construction and operation, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. Amusic holder and turner, comprising a base-plate A, and means for supporting the same, said base-plate being provided with a series of transverse slots, near the middle thereof, and a corresponding number of frames which are adapted to support the sheets of music, each frame being provided with a pin which is adapted to pass through one of said slots, and each frame being also provided with an arm which is pivotally connected with the bottom thereof, and which extends outwardly, and by means of which the frames are turned, substantially as shown and described.

2. A music holder and turner, comprising base-plate A, and means for supporting the same, said base-plate being provided with a series of transverse slots, near the middle thereof, and a corresponding number of frames which are adapted to support the sheets of music, each frame being provided with a pin which is adapted to pass through one of said slots, and each frame being also provided with an arm which is pivotally connected with the bottom thereof, and which extends outwardly, and by means of which the frames are turned, each of said slots in the base-plate,being also provided at its outer end with a circular enlarged opening through which a head connected with the pins secured to each frame is adapted to pass, and said base-plate being also provided with a sliding plate, which is adapted to close said circular opening, substantially as shown and described.

3. A music holder and turner, comprising a base-plate A, and means for supporting the same, said base-plate being provided with a series of transverse slots, near the middle thereof, and a corresponding number of frames which are adapted to support the sheets of music, each frame being provided with a pin which is adapted to pass through one of said slots, and each frame being also provided with an arm which is pivotally connected with the bottom thereof, and which extends outwardly, and by means of which the frames are turned, each of said slots in the base-plate, being also provided at its outer end with a circular enlarged opening through which a head connected with the pins secured to each frame is adapted to pass, and said base-plate being also provided with a sliding plate, which is adapted to close said circular opening, and said base-plate being also provided with vertical and stationary loops or frames within which sheets of music may be placed, substantially as shown and described.
