We B R'IVETING MACHINE.
No. 557,986. Patented Apr. 7, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM R. FOX, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOX MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
RIVETING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,986, dated April '7, 1896.
Application filed February 20, 1895. Serial No. 539,064 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WILLIAM R. FOX, a citizen" of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of, Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riveting-Machincs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the manufacture of sash-pulleys of sheet metal, and is designed specially to provide a simple and efiective device to rivet the parts of the pulley or wheel together by the use of a tube of sheet metal com monlyknown as a quill. In the manufacture of these pulleys I make them in sections out of sheet metal and secure the centers of the sections together by means of a short metal tube having its ends beaded over upon the sections, serving not only to draw the sections together and hold them securely, but also to furnish a hub for the wheel, and by the apparatus made the subject of the present application I am enabled quickly and perfectly to apply the quills to the wheel-sections and rivet them in place securely.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a part of a press embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a front View of the collars and base. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed sectional views.
In the figures the base of the press is shown at A, and secured to it is a circular disk 13. The press-frame is seen at 7 and the plunger or slide at It. Secured within a socket in the disk and base is a hollow base-piece D, containing a strong compression coil-spring 0t. This piece D has an extension b, forming a mandrel or die carrier, and a collar 0 encircles the mandrel, resting upon an enlargement c of the mandrel when the parts are compressed. The collar 0 and the mandrel b are mortised, as shown in Fig. 2, and in this mortise is fitted a block E, held by the headed screws 1 2, passing through the slots of the collar. Beneath this block E is a plug G,
fitting the opening in the end of the base-piece D, and under the tension of the spring below it tending to press the block E upward. In the upper end of the mandrel extension 17 is formed a socket, in which is secured a steel mandrel II, having a projecting center regisof the pulley-sections, and the parts just described, being duplicated by like parts connected to the slide of the press, form, when together, the complete configuration of the pulley-shell. The parts of the shell are supported upon the lower collar 0 when the upper plunger, in the position of Fig. 3, begins to descend. In this position the springs in the base-pieces D D have forced out the collars through the plugs G G and blocks E E, and the collars are thus in advance of the dies or mandrels. The pulley-sections are clamped between the faces of the collars O O and properly centered, and then the further descent of the press-plunger begins to compress and force back the collars against the pressure of the springs, which bring together the mandrels or dies with the effect of bending over the ends of the tube or quill, drawing the sections'of the pulley together and firmly securing them in place.
What I claim is- 1. In combination, a pair of spring-pressed collars, dies encircled by said collars, the adjacent faces of the said collars and dies being shaped to receive the two parts of a pulley, a projecting center on each die registering with the center of the pulley-sections and fitted to receive a quill or tube and a central depression around each center, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the collars C O the blocks E E, secured thereto, the plugs G G, the spring in rear of said plugs, the die-carriers and the dies, said dies having projecting centers and the carriers and collars having adjacent faces conforming to the shape of the pulley-sections, substantially as describe-d.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM R. FOX.
