To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY PUDDEFooT, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Framingham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot or Shoe Grips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to fix or secure the boot or shoe undergoing the process of polishing or cleaning.
TVhen a boot or shoe is being polished on the foot, it is difficult with some persons to maintain the foot steadily in position, and because of its slipping either the foot or the hand of the person polishing, or both, are liable to injury, while at the same time the slipping interferes with the securing of aperfect polish.
The object of my invention is to remedy or remove the liability of the foot slipping, especially laterally, and consequently to remove this liability of injury and remedy the defects in securing a perfect polish.
The means by which I effect the object of my invention are shown in the accompanying drawing, in which 13 is the boot or shoe, as shown in dotted or broken line; S, a sole plate or rest fixed upon a vertical pillar p, which pillar slides in a pedestal-column P and is ad j ustably fixed therein by the thumb-screw i. There is also provided a grip G G, one arm of which, G, is fixed, the other arm, G, being hinged at h and being provided at its lower end and below the hinge with a cam O. This cam bears upon the lower part of the grip-arm G and below the hinge in such a manner that the entering of the cam causes the jaws J J of the griparms to approach, and the entering of the cam is caused by depressing the thumb-lever L. The jaws J J are provided with V-shaped grooves VV in order to securely clamp upon the edge of the sole of the boot or shoe.
The grip is operated in the following manner: The boot or shoe being placed upon the sole-plate S, adjustment is made by the pillar p and the thumb-nutt until the sole of the boot or shoe is level with the jaw J. Then by depressing the lever L the arm G and the jaw J are forced forward, clamping securely the edges of the sole of the boot or shoe in the grooves V V. After the process of polishing or cleaning is completed, or as otherwise desired, the boot or shoe can be immediately released by raising the lever L.
It is obvious that all lateral motion of the boot or shoe during cleaning is avoided by this device, and any forward motion is prevented by the proper shaping of the sole-plate either by curving it or by providing a catch for the heel, as at 'm, or by both means.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A boot or shoe grip which consists of the sole-plate S vertically adjustable on the pillar p and pedestal-column P in combination with the fixed clamping-arm G and jaw J recessed as at V to clamp the edge of the sole of the boot or shoe, the adjustable arm G and the jaw J also recessed, operated by the cam O and lever-arm L, as set forth.
