SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 557,862, dated April 7, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, EDWARD M. MOOUL- LOCH, of Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, and CHARLES BUCKLEY, of New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridle-Bits, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention consists in an improvement in bridle-bits hereinafterfully described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the mouthpieces inclined.

A A represent two mouthpieces of an ordinary snaffle-bit, joined at the center by a pin 13 and provided with the ordinary reinrings 0, having cheek-pieces c.

D represents a ton gue-piece, approximately rectangular in its lower portion and V-shaped in its upper portion, though the shape may be varied without departing from our invention, which is movably secured to the two mouthpieces A in such manner as not to interfere with the fleXure of the mouthpieces at the joint B. This may be done in various ways, the one we have illustrated, and which is a good way, being to form a slot at through each of the mouthpieces A to pass yokes cl through said slots a and to secure the ends of the yokes cl to the tongue-piece D, as clearly shown in the drawings, as by this means the yokes (Z will slide in the slots a when the Serial No. 507,610. mouthpieces A are flexed, as shown in Fig. 3, retaining the position of tongue-piece D without interfering with the ordinary action of the bit. The whole of said tongue-piece D, or the upper part thereof, may be covered with leather, as indicated by E.

The operation of our invention is as follows: When the bit is placed in a horses mouth, the tongue-piece D lies over the tongue and prevents the horse from putting his tongue over the bit. The tongue-piece D does not interfere with the ordinary operation of the mouthpieces A A; but it makes the ordinary snaffle-bit a little more severe when in the position shown in Fig. 3, as the tongue-piece D serves as a fulcrum to throw joint B forward instead of permitting said joint to lie closely down on the horses tongue.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
