Be it known that LFREDEEICK H. WINIKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fostoria, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Calendar, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to calendars, and has for its object to provide a perpetual calendar of simple construction which maybe adjusted with facility to indicate the days of the week and month and phases of the moon, as well as the month and year, and, furthermore, to provide efficient means for communicating motion to a day-indicator without special manipulation except at the end of each month.
Further objects and advantages of this in* vention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a calendar constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view in perspective of the mechanically-operated indicator. Fig. 5 is a similar view of one oi" the manually-operated indicators. Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view of the means for operating the mechanical indicator.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The improved calendar embodies a frame 1, of which the face is inscribed with columns of iigures representing the days of the month, and hence ranging from l to 31, two of these columns (represented at 2 and being arranged, respectively, near side edges of the frame. The frame is provided with a central vertical slot 4, in which is arranged a slide 5, bearing characters indicating the days of the week, the slot and the slide being cross-sectionally dovetailed and increasing' in width toward the rear side of the frame and the rear side of said slot being closed at the top and bottom by transverse plates G and 7 to prevent the slide from being displaced. The slot 4 is open at its upper and lower ends, and the slide is of greater length than the portion of the slot exposed at the front of the frame, whereby any desired day of the week may be arranged in horizontal alinement with any numeral indicating a day of the month.
Contiguous to the slide is a strip 8, preferably of metal, provided With a series of perforations 9 to receive studs 10, projecting rearwardly from tags 11, bearing characters representing the moons phases, and said tags may be adjusted manually at the beginning of each month to indicate the dates of the phases.
Arranged at the side edge of the frame are guides 12, consisting of parallel metallic strips spaced apart at their inner edges to form a slot 13, Which is enlarged or dovetailed inwardly to receive buttons 14, forming parts of the manually-operated indicators 15, said indicators having pointers resting upon and adapted to traverse the Jface of the calendar and indicate special days of the month upon which the operator has engagements or to which it is desired that special attention shall be invited. Any desired number of these manually-operated indicators may be employed, and they are adjustable by means of the slot 13 to any desired point in the column of numerals representing the days of the month. Said buttons 14 are provided with threaded perforations 16 for engagement by the thumb-screws 17, and by tightening said thumb-screws the indicators may be locked at any desired point on the calendar.
In the drawings I have shown a guide and manually-operated indicators arranged at only one side edge of the calendar; but it is obvious that they may, if desired, be arranged at both sides Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Arranged in the face of the calendar and communicating with a longitudinal cavity 18, formed in the frame, is a vertical slot 19, in which moves a mechanicallyoperated indicator 2O to designate the days of the month in succession, and in the drawings I have shown mechanical means for operating said indicator whereby it moves at intervals of twenty-four hours from one numeral o'f the column to the next. The means employed foraccomplishing this object include a clock mechanism (shown at 21) provided with a twentyfounhour wheel 22, adapted to make one complete revolution in a day, said wheel carrying a stud 23, a chain-wheel 24, adapted to be IOO engaged by said stud at intervals of twentyfour hours to impart a partial rotary motion to the chain-wheel suflicient to move a chain 25 a distance equal to the interval between two contiguous numerals in the month-column, and an idle-pulley 26, arranged near the lower end of said month-column. This chain 25,which is arranged parallel with the monthcolumn and which may be substituted by any endless carrier receiving motion from continuously-operatin g mechanism, serves to impart motion to the mechanically-operated indicator 20,which is provided with a tongue 27 to engage a link of the chain.
A face-plate 28 covers the lower portion of the frame, and through a perforation 29 therein is extended a pin 30,which engages one of a series of similar perforations 3l in the weekslide 5 to secure the latter at the desired adjustment. An interchangeable month-slide 32 is tted in a suitable horizontal guide 33 at the upper end of the calendar, and above said guide 33 is a similar guide 34: for numerical blocks 35 to indicate the year, said blocks also being interchangeable to make the desired combinations.
This being the construction of the improved calendar, the operation thereof, briefly stated,
is as follows: The month-slide 32 should be changed on the first day of the month, a number of slides corresponding with the number of months in a year being arranged in a small receptacle 3G, arranged at the top of the calendar, and also on the first day of the month the week-slide 5 should be changed to bring the proper day of the week opposite the numerals l of the month-columns, and the tags indicating the phases of the moon should be adjusted to suit the particular month; also, the mechanically operated indicator should be adjusted upon the endless chain or carrier to point to the iirst day of the month. This adjustment having been accomplished, the mechanically operated indicator will move at the end of each twenty-four hours to point to the succeeding figure in the column indicating the days of the month, and the manually-operated indicator may be adjusted at will to indicate days to which special attention should be called upon which engagements occur. I have also shown a thermometer at 37 and other similar devices, including a barometer, which may, if desired, be employed.
The total number of days in the current month is indicated on the slide 32 following the name of the month, as, by reference to Fig. l, it will be seen that the current month, April, is followed by numerals indicating that the number of days vin said month is thirty.
rPhe clock-face, which I have shown in the drawings arranged opposite the dial 2l, may be used for .indicating the return of the occupant of an office or proprietor of a place of business to his office or place of business.
It will be understood that the space above the dia-ls and the face-plate 2S may bc employed for inscribing, respectively, the name of the person or firm possessing the calendar or by whom it has been presented and any advertisement or memorandum which it may be desirable to preserve. Then the faceplate 28 is to be used in inscribing memoranda, it should be made of suitable material-such as slate, celluloid, or their equivalent.
1he mechanicall,T-operated indicator may be omitted when desirable to produce a device of the minimum cost, and a manuallyoperated indicator, similar to that shown at one edge of the frame in the drawings, may be substituted therefor, such manually-operated indicator being arranged at the' numeral indicating the first day of the month, and subsequently moved downwardly each day until the last day of the month is reached, and various other changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. A calendar having a frame provided with a column of characters indicating the days of the month, an adjustable slide arranged parallel with said column and provided with characters indicating the days of the week, an endless carrier mounted to travel parallel with the column of month-indicating characters, means for communicating astep-by-step movement to said carrier at intervals of twenty-four hours, and an indicator, to traverse the month-column, detachably secured to said carrier, whereby at the end ofv the month the indicator may be detached and engaged with the carrier at a point opposite the character representing the first day of the month, to avoid adjusting the carrier, substantially as specified.
2. A calendar having a frame provided with a column of characters indicating the days of the month, an endless carrier mounted to travel parallel with the column of monthindicating characters and comprising a chain having open parallel-sided links, means for communicating a step-by-step movement to said carrier at intervals of twenty-four hours, and an indicator, to traverse the month-column, detachably secured to said carrier, said indicator having spring-jaws to engage one of the parallel sides of any desired link of the chain, substantially as specified.
