For instance assume the indicator to be set to +2 which means that the -lst of the month fell on a Tuesday. There may then be no need to refer to it at all. Then someone might ask what day of the week is the 24th. To ascertain this divide 2% by 7 which gives a remainder of 3; counting Sunday always as 1, 3 will be Tuesday, but the indicator says +2 so add two more days which makes Thursday. If the indicator had said 0 nothing would be added, it would therefore be Tuesday.
  • This indicator may be carried from a date indicator or a date indicating watch and is merely a modification of the pointer indicator hereinbefore described in which Sunday is always fixed as the 1st or rather the 1st as always Sunday. If the list is always-Sunday and the numerical indication be divided by 7, the 1st day of the remainder will always be a Sunday. For example what day of the week is the 17th. Now, 17 divided by 7 gives 2 and 3 over, the 2 may be discarded merely the remainder having to be considered. 3 days in advance of Sunday is Tuesday, e. the 17th is on Tuesday; assuming the indicator is set at 0. But if it is set to 1 it would be Monday, and if set to 3 it would be Saturday. 3 however is the greatest divergence, because the 3 figures above and below added to the 0 or Sunday make up the 7 days of the week.

Be it ltnown that l Gnonon PnnL limit, a subject of His iiilajesty the King of Great Britain, and resident of Farlrstone Heights, in the county or Dorset, Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful lin irovements in or Relating to Date-indicators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for use as a date indicator. erpetual date indicator and like device and has for its object to pro vide an improved construction of device adapted for use as a date indicator wherein the day of the week and the day of the month are positively and correctly indicated so that no confusion or dubiety can arise as to whether say the seventh of any particular month is a Sunday, lvllonday, Friday or other day of the week.
According to this invention the device broadly comprises two pointers relatively adjustable and simultaneously movable rectilineally, or circularly over, around or adjacent a numerical scale and a diurnal scale, so that the two pointers or index fingers can be set at the beginning of a month, one to the day of the month and the other to the day of the week. the two pointers or index fin 'ers hereinafter referred to as pointers, being thereaiter simultaneously movable by hand or mechanically by gear to indicate the (lay oi the week and the day of the month positively and correctly throughout the entire month.

Figs. 20, 21 show in elevation and section a further modified form of date indicator and Figs. 22 to 27 inclusive show still further modifications of the date indicator hereinafter fully described.
Fig. 28 shows a table for use with date indicators according to the present invention, which table may be stamped, pasted or otherwise indicated on any of the constructions hereinafter described.
Figs. 29, 30 and 31 are respectively a side view of the clock actuated mechanism by which the pointers 9 and 10 shown in Fig. 23 are simultaneously moved once everv twenty four hours i Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the device in its simplest form viz., the tablet form, comprises a rectangular board 1 of'suitable thickness, fiat on its upper face 2 and provided with a numerical scale 3 say on the left hand side of the board. This scale bears the numbers one to thirty one corresponding to the maximum number of days in a month. 011 the right hand side of the board is suitably indicated a diurnal scale 4.- or the days of the week the first and last indications be ing preferably Sunday as at 5 and Tuesday as at 6 respectively. Thursday. Friday and Saturday reading downwardly in the order of occurrence, and bel w the Tuesday indication at the bottom of the diurnal scale may be three additional indications namely lVednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Between the two scales and movable in a suitable recess 7 in the tablet is a flexible member such as a thong S or other suitable member carrying two pointers 9, 10 which are relatively adjustable so that either or both of the said pointers 9, 10 can be adjusted at the beginning of each month if found necessary, one to the number one on the left hand side scale 3 or numerical scale on the tablet or board and the other to the correct day of theweek on the'diurnal scale 4 on the right hand side. of the tablet. Thereafter thetwo pointers 9, 10 may be moved simultaneously when desired to give the correct day of the month and day of the week by pulling or pushing the flexible thong 8 or other suitable member carrying the pointers which in this construction point in opposite directions. The aforesaid movement would probably be eii'ected daily. For example, assuming the 1st day of the month to be on a Wednesday the left hand pointer 9 or. the thong or both pointer 9 and thong is or are adjusted so that the pointer 9 comes opposite the numeral 1 on the left hand scale 3, and the right hand Pointer 10 is adjusted to indicate Wednesday on the diurnal scale 4:. The two pointers 9, 10 are thus set andremain in this set position throughout the particular month for which they are set. Qn the morning of the second day of the month, the flexible thong 8 or other member carrying the pointers 9, 10 is pulled or pushed into such positionthat the left hand pointer indicates the numeral 2 when. it will be found that the right hand pointer then indicates Thursday, thus posi tively and correctly indicating that Thursday is the second day or" the month. The relative adjustment of the pointers may be eiiected through sir; or seven divisions of the diurnal scale to allow for the first day of the month falling on any day of the week. Half of these divisions may be indicated as additional divisions at the beginning and end of the diurnal scale, or three of such divisions may be at the end and four at the beginning as found most convenient thereby resulting in a reduction of the distance through which the relative adjustment of the pointers need be'etlected.
In Fig. i the thong 8 of Fig. 1 is shown as being replaced by a screwed rod 11 held against translational movement by the milled nut 13. In this construction the pointers 9, 10 are formed as spring metal clips screwed internally so that on rotating the screwed rod 11 the pointers can be simultaneously moved up and down as desired, the pointers being also removable bodily from the rod when desired. The construction shown in this figure is otherwise the same as that of Fig. 1.
The adjustment of the pointers may be etlected in any suitable and convenient manner, as for example by sliding one pointer say the pointer 10 in a slit 11 in the thong 8 relatively to the other pointer or by removing one pointer or both pointers bodily from the flexible thong or other carrying member and refixing the pointer or pointers in proper relation to the other; or if so desired sets of pointers bearing a fixed relation to each other may be employed, one set of which would probably fit one or more than one month, the other sets being used for the other months. Pointers of this nature are shown in Figs. 5 to 19 inclusive, these constructions showing two views viz. an elevation and plan of integral pointers. In Figs. 5 and 6 the pointers are shown as formed from a metal or other blank 13 having the pointers 9, 10 in alinement and stamped up therefrom, the body of the blank being thereafter bent at 14:, 15 to form spring clips so that the pointers can be fastened or secured to the flexible thong or other carrying member. In Figs. 8 and 10 of which Figs. 7 and 9 are the respective elevations the pointers 9 and 10 and shown as being spaced apart, the distance apart of the pointers in Fig. 8 being equal to the distance between any two adjacent days and in Fig. 10 the distance apart of the pointers corresponds to the distance between say Sunday and Tuesday. It so desired the pointers may be spaced apart any suitable distance as for example the pointer 9 may be arranged to indicate the numeral 1 and the pointer 10 Wednesday in a downward direction or any day up to say Thursday in an upward direction. It so desired each set of pointers may have the month slidably or otherwise suitably indicated thereon and the sets of pointers could be supplied yearly. The member carrying the pointers may be solid as shown at 16 Fig. 11, which represents a rectangular piece of wood or metal having the pointer 9 secured thereto and the pointer 10 formed of spring metal and slidable in a groove 17. Each end of the piece 16 is provided with a hook 18, 19 to which is attached a cord or wire as shown so that the piece 16 and pointers 9, 10 can be moved simultaneously when desired. The piece 16 may be moved by hand in which case the hooks 18, 19 and corresponding cords or wires are unnecessary. If so desired the member carrying the pointers 9, 10 may be hollow as shown at 20 Fig. 12 the pointer 9 being secured thereto and the pointer 10 being slidable in a slot 21 and made in the form of a spring clip. The member carrying the pointers may be round as shown at 11 Fig. 4 or square or hexagonal or of other suitable section and the pointers may be made from a metal blank 22 Figs. 14 and 15, the pointers 9, 10 being stamped or otherwise cut therein as shown and the body of the blank being subsequently bent round as at 22, to clip onto the carrying member.
.Vhen the leather thong is used as shown ing Fig. 1 the thong 8 may be suitably tensioned by passing the thong downwardly through holes 28, 24 arranged one at each end of the tablet and then upwardly through further holes 25, 26 adjacent the aforesaid holes. The thong 8 may have a loop or equivalent at either end or at both ends for hanging purposes. A roller 28, Fig. 1, hearing the months or a number of slides having the months on one side and blank on the other side and capable of being inserted in position may be mounted in or on the upper end of the tablet. The roller 28 or the slides where used may be frictionally retained in place, the roller being rotated when desired to indicate the proper month.
If so desired the pointers 9, 10 may be adjustable but otherwise immovable as shown in Figs. 16 and 18 and the numerical scale 3 and the diurnal scale a may be movable instead of the pointers. These scales may be arranged one on each side of the pointer as shown in Fig. 16 or between the pointers shown in F ig. 18. In each construction the scales are movable simultaneously to indicate the day of the week and month. The numerical and diurnal scales may be indicated on separate slides as 29, 80 Fig. 16 or on the same slide 81 as in Fig. 18 these slides being let into and slidable in recesses or in a recess in the face of the tablet.
lfn an alternative construction the tablet may be formed in two parts each part being provided with a pointer and the two parts being suitably connected together.
F or ollice and/or household use the device may be of a conveniently large size, as
shown in Figs. 20, 21 the pointers 9, 10 being preferably relatively adjustable in any suitable manner and these latter may be mounted on an endless band 32 or other suitable carrying member mounted on rollers actuated by a pull member 35 or push device adapted to rotate the rollers and a ratchet wheel 36 which may be maintained in any adjusted position by the action of a pawl. 37 and spring 38.
In the application of the invention to a watch or clock, the device may be combined therewith as a permanent fixture thereto as in Fig. 22 in which 39 is the watch, 10, ll the hour and minute hands thereof and 9, 10 the pointers. These latter are mounted on the same spindle or arbor as the hands of the watch and are independently movable thereof in any suitable manner. The two POlH QGI'S 9 and 10 may have tubular bosses, one of which may be split to receive the actuatin end of the other pointer so that one pointer or both pointers can be pulled out so as to adjust the pointer or pointers in position the pointers after adjustment being movable simultai'ieously. The device may be provided as an indication on the watch or clock or the said device may be provided in a circular form as an attachment to either a watch or clock or to both a watch and clock andmay be removable from both when desired.
As applied to the dial of a clock of any type the dial 42 or face thereof is provided with the numerals 1 to 31 and with four dots after the numeral 31, the numeral 1 preferably being placed or situated above or below the hour indication XII as shown in Fig. 23. The numerical scale 3 is marked circular-wise around the dial 12 or face of the clock and may be indicated on a piece of paper, cardboard or the like, or may be stamped, painted or indicated thereon in any convenient manner. inside the numerical scale 3 is indicated the diurnal scale *1, the day ofv the week indicated adjacent the numeral 1 being preferably Sunday, so that in successive order the day of the week opposite the numeral 31 will be Tuesday, the dots after the numeral 31 having Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday adjacent thereto and as read from the numeral 31 in a clockwise direction. Inwardly of the diurnal scale a and disposed to an equal extent on. each side of the center is a sector 13 bearing the diurnal indications Thurs day, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and lVednesday corresponding respectively to the last three dots before the numeral one and to the numerals 1, 2, 3 and ion the numerical scale. Suitably mountec at the center of the dial or face of the clock or watch are two pointers 9, 10, one t) having a preferably crescent shaped outer end 43, hereinafter referred to as the numerical pointer, the other pointer being formed as an ordinary pointer and referred to hereinafter as the diurnal. pointer 10. The two pointers are relatively adjustable within the limits of the diurnal indications on the stationary sector as hereinbefore referred to, such adjustment being allow d for by a suitable formation of the bosses of the two pointers. in one construction for adjustment the two pointers 9, 10 may be mounteu on a tube 14i, Fig. 2d, the numerical pointer 9 being loose on the tube it and arranged outside the diurnal pointer 10 and between the diurnal pointer 10 and a suitable head on the outer end of the carrying tube 1% which may be providedwith a rross pin -15 adapted to engage a V br other slot as in the boss of the numerical pointer. The two pointers 9, 10 may be adjusted relatively by pressing on the head end d5 of the tube tel against the action of a spring; -16
and thereafter turning the said head i,
tube stat and diurnal pointer 10 rigidly mounted in the tube. 9n releasing, the head end of the tube the spring forces the read end. of the tube and the diurnal pointer forward and the tube is manipulated so that the cross pin therein engages in another re- (ess in the boss of the numerical pointer the two pointers being then movable simultaneously while still retaining their relative distance apart. The carrying tube it may be suitably mounted on the central spindle of the dial or face of the clock or watch or may be carried on a suitable pin in a circular frame bearing the numerical and diurnal scales which frame may be sprung into position on the clock or watch, dial or face.
The device may be arranged in the position of the date indicator usually occupied on large eight day clocks or on watches the single pointer therein used being placed by the two pointers hereinbefore described. In this construction the two pointers would be moved once simultaneously every twenty four hours by the clock mechanism their relative rdjustment being effected by hand once a month or as found necessary, such construction being shown in Figs. 29, and in Fig. 29., the clock mechanism frame is indi ted at bl the arbor 62 having a wheel 63 with teeth and driven by a suitable pinion from the clock mechanism. The pointer it) may be adjusted each month by means of the slotted disk 6 tight on the center arbor and the rod 65 engaging the slot 66 in the disk 64:; or if so desired the rod 65 may be caused to act on tl e gear wheel 63 so as to effect the monthly adjustment.
The dial or face of the clock or watch may also be provided with a circular ring bearing the months on its face, the ring being rotatable by a pull or push member so as to bring the proper month into position behind a suitable opening in the dial or face of the ClOCli or watch. If so desired the said ring may be operated by gearing from the main driving spindl of the clock or watch or in any other suitable manner.
In further modification the numerical and diurnal scales 3, l, respectively may be mounted on separate disks 47. as as shown in In this construction the disk bearing the numerical scale 3 is shown at i? and the diurnal scale disk at 4:8. The pointers 9 10 being as before relatively adjustable so that one or other pointer can be shifted to the correct of the week on the ii st day of the month or at other convenient time. After adjusting either pointer or both pointers 9 10 to their relatively correct position on the first day of the month so that the pointer indicates the correct day on which the first day of the month begins and the oth '7 pointer indicates the numeral 1, the two disks 4C7 and 48 are simultaneously rotated daily or when necessary or day ' convenient by the fingers into a position such. that the numeral indication of the day of the month and the diurnal indication come into correct position with the respec tive pointers. The pointers 9, 10 thus retain throughout any one month the position to which they have been set at the beginning of the month consequently simultaneous movement of the disks e7, a8 is all that is required to give the correct number of the day of the month and the day of the week throughout the a remainder of the month after the first of the month. The construction permitting of the adjustment of the pointers may be effected in a manner such as hereinbefore described or in any other suitable and convenient manner. The disks 4:7, 48 carrying the numerical and diurnal indications may be rotated simultaneously by a pull cord or by a push device or other suitable means. When two separate disks or separate rings are used they may be mounted on the same spindle and be interconnected in any suitable manner so as to give the simultaneous movement.
Above the casing or frame 49 carrying or forming the support of the calendar a roller 50, hearing indications of the month may be a r 'anged such roller being rotatable by hand or f cm a projection or projections on the dish or ring or on the separate disks or. rings.
in Figs. 26 and 27 the calendar is shown as comprising a frame 49 or casing within which a disk 51 of cardboard wood or other suitable material is mounted on a pivot 52. As shown the disk 51 projects sidewise through slits in the frame so that the said disk can be rotated by the fingers; or the frame may be recessed and completely inclose the disk. In this construction the numerical and diurnal scales 3, 4 respectively are indicated on one and the same disk, the numerals of the numerical scale being visible only through an opening 53 in the front of the frame or casing and seven of the diurnal indications being visible through an opening 54 adjacent the opening 53. .hrtside of the frame or casing is a pointer 10 mounted on the pivot 52 carrying the disk, the said pointer being adjustable throughout a distance corresponding to the days of one week. In lieu of the centrally arranged pointer a slidable pointer may be mounted in a groove or recess 55 adjacent the diurnal indication opening 54. Near the bottom of the frame 49 is a roller 56 hearing the monthly indications or such roller may be replaced by two rollers 57, 58
bearing an endless band 59 having the monthly indications thereon. If so desired the roller or endless band may be replaced by a circular form of monthly indications as shown at 60, or by printed slab or slips showing month and year.
As the date indicator may be constructed in many forms without departing from the nature of the invention I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the of calendar. As before the diurnal indications throughout the month are indicated on the calendar the numeric indications being so arranged that the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th are always opposite a Sunday. The indicator may be the form of an endless band on rollers revolved by a knob on which are printed the signs 1, 2, 3, O placed vertically or horizontally and the required number indicated by a movable pointer which also bears a plus or minus indicator. This indicator is set once a month showing either +1, +2, +3 or 1, +2, -3 or a cipher 0. To set the indicator correctly at the beginning of each month proceed as follows :1f the 1st (always marked Sunday) does in effect fall on Sunday, set the indicator to O which is equivalent to 2 pointers being in line, for the rest of the month the days of the week would be as permanently indicated.
But should the 1st of the month though marked Sunday, not in effect fall on a Sunday, but on a l/Vednesday, the indicator would then be set to +3, which is equivalent to the movable pointer hand being 3 divisions lower than the pointer. Should the 1st of the month he on a Friday it would be necessary to set the indicator to 2 which is equivalent to the movable pointer hand of the pointer date indicator herein before described, being two divisions higher than the fixed pointer hand. Assume that a date indicator of this description had been bought on the 19th of the month and that the first day of the month had already passed, all that is required is to ascertain what day of the week the 19th actually falls on. For example say it is found that the 19th is on Friday, the permanently marked numerals show the 19th to be Thursday 6. one day in advance of Thursday. Therefore the indicator must be set to +1, which denotes that during the rest of the month (as also the preceeding days) one day must be added to the day that is marked i. e. the 6th would have been Saturday, the 28th will be Sunday, i. 6. one day in advance of the day permanently indicated which is Saturday.
The above modification may be applied to a watch above or on the dial of which is provided the indicator. If this indicator had been set to O, the dial would read Monday the 2nd but as it is set to +2, it will be read as the 2nd Wednesday, i. e. 2 points ahead of the Monday permanently marked. This practically amounts to imagining another pointer hand which is not really there, and is therefore merely a modification of the clock form of indicator hereinbefore described. The indicator may be in the form of a small ivory tablet pendant or fixed to the watch or the watch strap with the figures l, ,2, 3, 0 printed. thereon and at the beginning of each month (or whenever the -in dicator is first brought in use) to aiiix or mark above a plus or minus sign, and a dot or some other mark over the 0 when the 0 is to be indicated, the sign being erased at the beginning of each month as required; or three thin tablets to slide into a groove and reversible may be used as indicators, no 0 sign being then necessary as a blank would be sufiicient.
An indicator of this description could always be carried on the watch chain without a calendar, and provided it was set correctly at the beginning of the month would be always serviceable. For instance assume the indicator to be set to +2 which means that the -lst of the month fell on a Tuesday. There may then be no need to refer to it at all. Then someone might ask what day of the week is the 24th. To ascertain this divide 2% by 7 which gives a remainder of 3; counting Sunday always as 1, 3 will be Tuesday, but the indicator says +2 so add two more days which makes Thursday. If the indicator had said 0 nothing would be added, it would therefore be Tuesday. This indicator may be carried from a date indicator or a date indicating watch and is merely a modification of the pointer indicator hereinbefore described in which Sunday is always fixed as the 1st or rather the 1st as always Sunday. If the list is always-Sunday and the numerical indication be divided by 7, the 1st day of the remainder will always be a Sunday. For example what day of the week is the 17th. Now, 17 divided by 7 gives 2 and 3 over, the 2 may be discarded merely the remainder having to be considered. 3 days in advance of Sunday is Tuesday, e. the 17th is on Tuesday; assuming the indicator is set at 0. But if it is set to 1 it would be Monday, and if set to 3 it would be Saturday. 3 however is the greatest divergence, because the 3 figures above and below added to the 0 or Sunday make up the 7 days of the week.
The calendar with indicator may be applied to a pen holder having a numerical scale and a diurnal scale provided thereon, the principle being the same as my pointer calendar but dispensing with the movable pointer hand by having a revolving or other suitable indicator at the top and a sliding indicator movable day by day. The slidable indicator may run up the middle of the pen holder between the figures, and with the figures visible it is an easy matter to count three back or two or three forward as the case might be.
This construction of date indicator apart from the penholder might equally well be used as a pendant for a watch chain.
What I claim is 1. A date indicator comprising a support having a longitudinal opening formed therein, said support being provided near and upon opposite sides of the longitudinal opening with a numerical scale and a diurnal scale, a longitudinally movable element operating within the longitudinal opening, and pointers carried by the longitudinally movable element, one pointer being adjustable longitudinally of the element with relation to the other pointer.
2. A date indicator comprising a support having a longitudinal opening formed therein, said support being provided near ano upon opposite sides of the longitudinal opening with a numerical scale and a diurnal scale, a longitudinally movable element arranged within said opening, a pointer carried by the element to coact with one scale, a second pointer slidably engaging said element and adapted to be adjusted longitudinally thereof, and means to move said ele ment.
3. A date indicator comprising a support having a longitudinal opening formed therein, said support being provided near and upon opposite sides thereof with a numerical scale and a diurnal scale, an element mounted within the longitudinal opening to be moved longitudinally thereof and having a longitudinal slot, a pointer fixed to the element and cooperating with one scale, a second pointer slidably mounted within said slot and cooperating with the other scale, and means to move said element.
t, A date indicator comprising a support provided with independent and relatively fined non-adjustable numerical scale and diurnal scale in combination with pointers cooperating respectively with said scales and adapted for adjustment with relation to one another to initially register the respective pointers with a particular number and a particular day,and provide for the maintenance of this adjusted relation of the pointers throughout a predetermined use of the date indicator.
