HENRY I SCOTT, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
MEDlClNE-DOSE INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,616, dated April '7, 1896.
Application filed August 6, 1895.
To all whom it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY P. SCOTT, a citizen of the lnited States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in liledieine-Indicators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawin My invention relates to improvements in medicine-indicators.
The object of my invention is to provide an indicator designed for nurses use, by which the medicine to be taken and the time and frequency of taking shall be clearlyindicated.
My invention comprises a base-plate or card having suitable perforations therethrough, one or more movable plates adapted to be moved upon the rear side of the perforated plate, the said movable plates being provided with suitable inscriptions on the front side adapted to be seen through the said perforations, a dial having thereon numerals 1 to 12, inclusive, and a pointer movable over the dial.
My invention further consists in two sliding plates upon the rear of a base-plate, one of the sliding plates having inscribed on the side next the baseplate duplicated names of the medicines to be administered, and the other sliding plate having inscribed on the same side intervals of time, openings or perforations through the base-plate so disposed as to disclose one name at a time and one character indicating the interval of time, a clock-dial on the face of the base-plate hav ing a pointer connected therewith, and suitable inscriptions on the face of the base-plate, whereby the name of the medicine to be taken, the time of taking, and the frequency of talcing can be shown on the indicator.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of my invention, Figure 1 represents an elevation view. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the sliding name-plate. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the sliding plate for indicating the time interval. resents a top edge view.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
A indicates a base-plate, made, preferably,
Fig. 4 rep- Serial No. 558,412. (No model.)
of cardboard, the upper end of which is provided with a perforation B, by means of which the plate may be suspended.
C indicates a rectangular slot made in the plate transversely near the upper edge, and D indicates a similar transverse slot located below the slot 0 and within a dial F on the face of the plate A.
G indicates a pointer or hand pivoted to the plate A centrally within the dial F.
To the right of the slot 0 is another slot E, similar in form to the slot C. The slots C, D, and E are formed by cutting the plate A transversely along the upper and lower edges of the slots, depressing the plate between the cuts and leaving the right and left ends intact, thus forming a loop designated by C" and shown in Fig. t.
A rectangular plate H is fitted within the loops formed in the plate A to the rear of the slots 0 and D, and is capable of vertical movement against the rear side of the plate A. A rearwardly-extending projection K is provided near the two ends of the plate H, which prevents the said plate from being accidentally withdrawn from the loops during vertical adjustment. The front side of the plate H is inscribed with two sets of names of medicines to be administered. The two sets of names are the same, and each name is similarly disposed as regards location in the set as the same name in the other set. The dis tance between the same name in the two sets is the same as the distance between the slots 0 and D, so that both names appear at the openings C and D at the same time. In the drawings, for illustration, the words Pills and Drops are inscribed on the front of the plate H. A similar sliding plate J is movably mounted upon the rear of the plate A and in front of the loop 0. The front side of this plate is inscribed with characters representing intervals of time, as hr., 1 hr., 2 hrs, and so on for the number of hours desired. lVithin the dial is inscribed the word Taken, to the left of the slot 0 is inscribed the word Take, and to the right of the said slot is inscribed the word Every. Below the dial F is located a similar dial F, in the center of which is pivoted a pointer G. The slots 0 and D are similar to and located in the same position with relation to the dial F as the slots C D are to the dial F. A movable plate H, similar to the plate H, is similarly secured upon the rear of the plate A. A plate J, similar to the plate J, is similarly located upon the rear of the plate A, and is provided with the same inscriptions adapted to be seen through an opening E, located similarly to the slot E. The same inscriptions about and within the dial F are provided as about and within the upper dial. The plate H, however, is provided with two set of inscriptions differing from the inscriptions upon the plate H. By having two or more dials and sets of sliding plates the indicator may be made to indicate two or more medicines to be taken and the time of taking without interference one with the other. If, for instance, the lower plate H is provided with the inscriptions Powders and Mixture, either of these medicines may be indicated at the same time that the plate H indicates another medicine.
My invention is operated as follows: When a medicine is given, the pointer or hand is moved to the hour on the dial at which the medicine is given. The plate H is then moved vertically to a position in which the medicine taken will be shown in the slots 0 and D. The plate J is then adjusted so that the char acter indicating the interval of time which shall elapse between the times of taking the medicine shall be made to appear at the slot E.
It will be readily seen that by the use of my invention nothing is left to the memory of the nurse or patient, but that the time of last taking the medicine and the frequency with which it is to be taken are shown at a glance.
I do not confine myself to the exact construction herein shown and described; but it will be evident that many variations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit of my invention.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an indicator of the kind described, the combination with the base-plate, A, having the slots, 0, D, and E and the loops 0, of the plates H and J movable upon the rear side of the base-plate and held thereto by means of the loops 0 and provided with the projections K near each end, the dial F and the pointer G pivoted to the base-plate and movable adjacent to the dial-plate characters, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY P. SCOTT.
