SCREEN FOR LADIES BICYCLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,488, dated March 31, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THERON R. CHERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buckhannon, in the county of Upshur and State of WVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens for Ladies Bicycles, of which the following specification contains a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the screens applied to a ladys bicycle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the near screen being partially folded. Fig. 3 is a detail of the screen removed. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a screen adapted to be secured to the casings to close the space therebetween.

The invention relates to screens for ladies bicycles.

The objects of the invention are to provide a screen to be secured to the front end or head of a ladys bicycle and adapted to be folded up thereagainst or unfolded and extended past the pedals, so as to protect the feet and ankles from view when mounting or riding and also to prevent the skirts from be: ing blown about the limbs; also, to provide a easing into which the screen may be folded when not in use.

The invention consists principally in a folding screen adapted to be attached, one at each side of the head of the bicycle, to protect the feet and ankles from view when mounting and riding the machine; also, in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

A is an ordinary ladys safety-bicycle, to the head A of which at opposite sides thereof are secured the two casings B B, open at their rear sides and curved inwardly at their lower sides, as shown at B. The casings may be secured'by any suitable clips or brackets B 0 O are the folding screens, preferably formed fan-like, as shown. Each screen 0011- sists in a series of radial arms 0 pivoted together at their lower curved ends, as shown at c, and the forward arm 0 being secured within the case, so that it will support the fan when it is in its unfolded position. The arms are covered by any suitable fabric 0 and when unfolded the screen will extend Serial No. 557,624. (No model.)

back past and below the pedals. The curvature of the arms 0 at 0 will cause the screens to extend outwardly a sufficient distance to avoid the pedals and not interfere with the operation thereof or with the feet of the rider. The several arms 0 are each provided with an eye 0 and a cord or strap is passed freely through these eyes and secured to the eye on the outer or lower arm, so that when pulled by the finger-piece or ring 0 the screen will be folded into the case, where it may be secured in any suitable manner-for instance, by engaging the cord with a button 0 on the casing, or if a strap is used by providing it with one or more buttonholes to engage the button.

The screens are swung down before mounting and the rider steps behind one of them and mounts without danger of exposing the ankles to prying eyes.

Any suitable material may be employed in the construction of the arms, light stiif wire being preferred, and the cases may be formed of sheet metal, leather, or prepared paper.

D is a front screen to close the space between the casings B at the front of the machine and prevent draft therebetween, the screen D being provided with a series of eyes cl at its edges which engage with a series of hooks b on the casings B, so that said screen may be readily applied and removed. The lower end of the screen D has a slot or opening (1 to straddle the front bicycle-wheel.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A folding screen for ladies bicycles, provided with means for securing it to the front of the frame and adapted to unfold down past the pedals, substantially as set forth.

2. A folding screen for ladies bicycles, provided with means for securing it to the front of the frame and adapted to unfold down past the pedals, and an operating cord or strap for folding the screen when pulled upon, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with the casing adapted to be secured to the front of the bicycle and open at its rear side, of a folding fanelike screen mounted in the casing to unfold rearwardly past the pedals substantially as set forth.

4. The combination with the casing adapted to be secured to the front of the bicycle and open at its rear side, of a folding fan-like screen having arins provided with eyes and a pull-cord for folding the screen, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination of the casings and folding screens at opposite sides of the front end or head of the frame, with a front screen slotted or bifurcated to straddle the front wheel and means for detachably connecting said screen with the said casings, substantially as set forth.
