UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT ALEXANDER BOYD, OF BELLEVILLE, CANADA.
COMBINED SAD-IRON AND FRILLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,477, dated March 31, 1896.
Application filed July 1 1 l 8 94..
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT ALEXANDER BOYD, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and a resident of the city of Belleville, in the county of Hastings and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sad-Iron and Friller, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to those combined sadirons and frillers having detachable and removable handles and in which the plate of the friller forms the lid or cover of the heaterchamber; and my improvements consist in features of novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved combined sad-iron and friller and stand therefor. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3, the heater being shown in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a top View of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the body. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the body, the friller-plate being omitted to uncover the heater. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the body, both the friller-plate and heater being omitted. stand.
1 is the hollow body or shell of my sad-iron, which is shown supported on a suitable stand or spider S having corner projections s. The body is cast or formed in one piece with an angular nose-piece or stud 1 having an inner angular projection 1 and a horizontal recess or notch 1", with a loop or heel-piece 1, having a slot or opening 1 at the rear of the body and with heating-chamber 1 2 is the heater formed with a vertical angu lar recess 2 at its front end, adapted to receive the angular projection of the body, and with a lifter-opening 2.
3 is the removable friller-plate, which provides a cover or lid to the heater-chamber.v
It is cast integral with an angular recess 3' at its front end adapted to fit the angular projection of the body, with an inclined slot 3 located at the rear of the recess, with a curved rear lug 3 engaging with the loop or Fig. '7 is a top view of the Serial No. 517,264. (No model.)
heel-piece, with a corrugated or ribbed surface 3 forming the lower member of the friller, and with a screw-hole 3 located between the corrugated surface and the rear lug. The frame of the handle of the sad-iron is cast integral with a horizontal shield 4:, with a forwardly and downwardly extending arm 4 inserted in the inclined slot of the friller-plate, with a rearwardly and downwardly extending rear arm 4 connected with the frillerplate, and with upwardly-extending arms 4 supporting a wooden handle 5, which is secured to the upper arms by screws 6 inserted through suitable perforations i in the upper arms. Formed on the front lower arm is a horizontal ledge 4 having an angular recess 4 fitting the angular projection of the body. The ledge is formed with a pair of cheekplates 4 perforated to provide pivot-bearings 4 for the pivot-pin 7 of a bell-crank lever 8, having a short arm 8 and a longer arm 8 formed with a recess 8, and an extension 8 provided with a knob or finger-piece 9 within reach of the fingers when the handle is grasped by the hand. The knob or finger-piece is secured by the screw 10 passed through a perforation 8 in the end of the extension.
11 is a loosely-mounted latch-block adapted to slide on the ledge between the cheek-plates. This latch-block is formed with a pair of lugs 11, between which the short arm of the bellcrank lever works for causing the latch-block to move back and forth to unlock the handleframe and the filler-plate from or to lock them with the body. Fastened to the front upper arm is a leaf spring 12, whose free end extends through the recess of and bears on the longer arm of the lever for holding the latchblock in normal position in engagement with the horizontal recess in the nose-piece.
13 is a thumb-screw extending through a perforation 43 (registering with the screw-hole of the friller-plate) in the rear lower arm of the handle-frame into the screw-hole of the friller-plate for securing the handle-frame to the friller-plate in connection with the front lower arm which extends into the inclined slot of the friller-plate.
To put the parts of my sad-iron together, the heater is placed in the hollow body or shell with its angular recess fitting against the angular projection of the body. The rear curved lug of the friller-plate is inserted in the loop or heel-piece and lowered onto the body, the angular recess of the friller-plate receiving the angular projection of the body. The handle-frame is next secured to the body and friller-plate by inserting the front lower arm in the inclined slot of the friller-plate and the projecting end of the latch-block into the horizontal recess of the nose-piece and then fastening the lower rear arm of the handle-frame to the friller-plate by the tl1u1nbscrew. To remove the handle-frame from the friller-plate and from the body, the thumbscrew is removed and the latch-block withdrawn by raising the extension of the bellcrank lever, when the parts will be readily separated. To remove both the handle-frame and friller-plate for gaining access to the heater, merely the extension of the bell-crank lever is raised to withdraw the latch-block, when these parts can be lifted off, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A sad-iron comprising a body having a nose-piece formed with a horizontal recess, an inner projection, and a rearwardly-exten (1- ing loop, a plate having a recess fitting the projection, a slot, a rear lug engaging the loop, and a screw-hole, the handle-frame having a front lower arm inserted in the slot of the plate, a ledge having a recess fitting the projection, the cheekplates having pivotbearings and a rear lower arm having a perforation registering with the screw-hole of the plate, a latch-block having lugs and located on the ledge between the cheek-plates, a lever mounted in the pivot-bearings, having a short arm engaging the lugs of the latch-block, and a longer arm having an extension for operating the lever, a spring for holding the lever and latch-block in normal position, and a screw for securing the rear lower arm to the plate; substantially as described.
2. A sad-iron comprising a body having an angular nose-piece formed with a horizontal recess, an inner angular projection, and a rearwardly-extending loop, a plate having an angular recess fitting the angular projection, an inclined slot, a curved rear lug engaging the loop, and a screw-hole, the handle-frame having a front lower arm inserted in the inclined slot of the plate, a ledge having an angular recess fitting the angular projection, and cheek-plates having pivot-bearings, and a rear lower arm having a perforation registering with the screw hole of the plate, a latclrbloek having lugs and located on the ledge between the cheek-plates, a bell-crank lever mounted in the pivot-bearings, having a short arm engaging the lugs of the latch block, and a longer arm having an extension for operating the bell-crank lever, a spring for holding the bell-crank lever and latchblock in normal position, and a screw for securing the rear lower arm to the plate; substantiall y as described.
Dated this 2d day of April, A. D. 1894.
ROBERT ALEXANDER BOYD.
