PROCESS OF DEODORIZING PETROLEUM AND PRODUCTS THEREOF.

Be it known that I, ALBERT J OANNES TEM- PERE, of the city of Paris, France, have invented Processes of Deodorizing Petroleum and other Hydrocarbons, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in France for fifteen years, dated December 4, 1893, No. 234,523; in Belgium for fifteen years, dated June 1, 1894, N 0. 110,246; in England for fourteen years, dated June 6, 1894, No. 10,772; in Italy for fifteen years, dated June 30, 1894, LXI, 422, and in Austria for fifteen years, dated June 26, 1894, 44/ 2,744,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a process of treating petroleum for the purpose of depriving it of its characteristic disagreeable odor and facilitating perfect combustion when burned.
Refining even in the most perfect manner is inadequate to deprive petroleum of its odor, and the attempts to attain it by means of perfumes have also failed to give any practical result, either industrially or commercially.
My invention consists in the process of deodorizing petroleum by adding amylacetate thereto, and the new and useful burning fluid consisting of petroleum and amylacetate which are hereinafter described and claimed.
The process of my invention permits of obtaining a product possessing all the properties of petroleum without its objectionable qualities. This process is based on the employment of amylacetate, (amylacetic ether, composed of carbon, 64.61 per cent; hydrogen, 10.76 per cent. oxygen, 24.63 per cent.,)
of which the moderate price, the agreeable odor, and high boiling-point render the product practically superior.
I will indicate the addition of amylacetate to petroleum preferably in the proportion of about ten grams of amylacetate per liter of petroleum, according to the quality of the liquid employed.
I thus obtain a novel product giving a pure flame.
The product possesses an agreeable slightlyacidulated odor, and its combustion does not give ofi any objectionable emanations, primarily for the reason that the amylacetate supplies the necessary oxygen for the complete combustion of the petroleum.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described process of treating petroleum for the purpose of deodorizing the same, which consists in adding amylacetate thereto in the proportions herein set forth.
2. As a new and useful article of manufacture, a burning fluid consisting of petroleum and amylacetate in the proportions of two grains of amylacetate to one liter of petroleum.
The foregoing specification of my process of deodorizing petroleum and other hydrocarbons signed by me this 5th day of October, 1894.
