Description

UNITED STATES `PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY C. SMALL, OFPORTLAND, MAINE.
IM PROVEMENT IN CATTLE-Tl E.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,727, dated June 19, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, HENRY C. SMALL, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented anew and Improved Cattle-Tie; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others to make and use my invent-ion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speeication, in which- Figure l showsa plan of my invention, indieatin g its form; Fig. 2, a side view of the same, showing the spring s.
The object of my invention is toproduce av convenient and safe tie for cattle.
It consists of two bows of metal wire or rod, ofthet'orm shown in the drawings, and marked c and d.
On the ends of the bow l the wire or rod is bent into hooks, as seen at ff. The ends of the bow c are also formed into hooks or rings, in order that the two ends of the bows may be locked into each other, as illustrated in the drawings. k k show the hooks on the bow c. The bow d is also bent so as to form a ring at h. This is to receive the cord or halter that passes around the animals neck. One ofthe hooks on the bow c isleft open, as seen in Fig. 2, and a spring consisting of a tongue of metal riveted to the bow and bearing against the under side of the end ofthe hook is attached thereto, to close the space thus left open. s
-of the bow c, having the spring, can be released and the tie unfastened. The hooks upon the opposite side are closed and cannot be opened.
Thedevice thus described and illustrated is intended to pass around the stanchion of a cattle-stall. When uni'astened the two ends which are unlocked can be united by simply pressing the hook of the bow d against the spring' s and forcing it into the corresponding hook on the bow c, and the spring immediately lies up and closes the space otherwise open. Thus a simple, handy, and cheap device for securing cattle in their stalls is obtained.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the bows d and c, the bow d having the ring h and hooksff on its ends, the bow c the two hooks k k and spring s, all constructed, arranged, and operating as set forth. v
HENRY C. SMALL.
