PRICE-SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 557,064, dated March 24, 1896.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY FISHER, of Neoga, in the county of Cumberland and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Computing-Scale, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to computing-scales which give the value of an article at the given price per pound or other unit, and which price is varied by the operator manipulating the scales.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved computin g-scale, which is simple and durable in construction, very eiective in operation, reliable and always in proper balance.
The invention consists principally of' a Inovable point of connection between the weighing-beam and the weighing-frame.
rlhe invention further consists of a movable weight for automatically preserving thebalance of the beam throughout all the changes of the connection between the weighing-beam and the weighing-frame- The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a front elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional front elevation, on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4, of the connection between the weighing-beam and the frame-platform, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
The improved computing-scale is provided with the usual base A, on which is erected a frame A supporting standards A2, formed in their upper ends with bearings A3 engaged by the knife-edges B2 of a rod B', forming part of the scale-beam B, supporting at one end a weight-carrier C, adapted to receive the usual weights D.
On the beam B is fitted to slide a poise E adapted to indicate in the usual manner on thegraduation B3, so as to indicate the proper weight of the article to be weighed, it being understood that the weights D indicate the 5o hundreds-weight and the poise E indicates the units-weight up to 100.
On the rod Band on the side of the knifeedge B2 opposite to that on which the weights D are located, is fitted to slide a sleeve F, carrying knife-edges F projecting into loops G formed on arms G2, extending upwardly from a second sleeve G mounted to slide longitudinally on the middle portion of the frame Il, made U-shaped, and connected with the scale-platform arranged in the base A in the usual manner. The frame ll has its sidev arms Il fitted to slide in suitable bearings A4 and A5, fastened to the base-frame A, as plainly indicated in Fig. l.
The under side of the sleeve G is adapted to be engaged by a shoe I, preferably made semicircular, as is plainly indicated in Fig. 4, and secured on the upper end of a stem I', fitted to slide vertically in a bearing J formed at or near the middle of a carriage J, having its wheels J2 mounted to travel in slots K of guide-rails K, attached to the top of the frame A. The stem Il carries at its lower end a spring I2, resting with its upper end on the under side of the carriage J and with its lower end on a collar 13, secured or formed near the lower end of the said stem I. The latter is provided near its upper end with a collar I", adapted to be seated on the top of the bearing J to limit the downward movement of the stem 1/ and its sleeve I. A lever l5 is pivotally connected with the eXtreme lower end of the stem I', and this lever is fulcrumed at J on one end of the carriage J, as is plainly illustrated in Figs. l and 3.
Now it will be seen that by the arrangement described the connection between the scale-beam B and the frame H of the platform is made in such a manner that the said connection can be shifted longitudinally on the beam B by the operator manipulating the lever I5, so that a variation can be had at any time between the weight of the scale-beam B and the point of connection between the scalebeam and the platform-frame H. When the operator presses on the outer end of the lever 1:", he causes the stein I to slide upward, so as to Inove the shoe I in engagement with the sleeve G, and as the said shoe I is pivotally connected by arms L with a second shoe L', adapted to engage the sleeve F, both sleeves G and F are Inoved simultaneously, so that ICO the operator, upon operating on the lever I5, causes the carriage J, and consequently the sleeves G and F, to travel forward or backward on the frame H and rod B, according to the push or pull given to the lever I5.
On the carriage J is formed a stud J '1, on which is mounted to turn loosely a disk N, adapted to roll on the top surface A of the base-frame A, so that as the said disk N turns the carriage J is moved forward or backward in its bearings in the rails K. A pointer O which projects upon the circular graduation N on the disk N is supported by an arm O/, attached to the carriage J.
Now it Will be seen that the graduation NQ which determines the price per pound or other unit, is indicated on the fixed pointer O forming part of the traveling carriage J, so that the operator on shifting the latter can set the said disk on the pointer O to any price per pound or other unit of the article to be weighed. Y
In order to balance the weight of the connection between the beam B and the frame II, I provide the following device: On the rod B, on the opposite side of the knife-ed ge B2 to that on which the sleeve F is located, is iitted to slide a weight P connected at its lower end at one side with a rope Q extending over a pulley R on the end of the beam B next to the weights D. The rope Q extends loosely through an opening in the weight P to connect with a hook on one end of the sleeve F, and the other end of the latter is connected with a second rope Q passing over a pulley R j ournaled on the other end of the beam B, as plainly indicated in Fig. l. The rope Q connects with the weight P on that end opposite to the one on which the rope Q is attached.
Now it will be seen that when the sleeve F is shifted, as previously described, by the operator manipulating the lever I5, then the weight P will move toward the knife-edge B2 at the time the sleeve F moves from the opposite side of the rod B toward the same knifeedge B2, and when the said sleeve moves outward away from said knife-edge B2 then the weight P likewise moves outward away from the said knife-edge. Thus the weight of the connection between the rod B and frame H is at all times counterbalanced by the weight P moving in unison with the sleeve F on the rod B.
The beam BS is provided in addition to its graduations with suitable figures representing the prices of various goods, and it will be seen that the price of any particular article will be automatically indicated by the poise E and its position on the beam.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a computing-scale, a weighing-beam, a platform, a connection between the weighing-beam and platform-frame, and comprising a sleeve movable on the said weighingbeam, a sleeve movable on the said platformframe, shoes adapted to engage the said sleeves, a lever for manipulating the said shoes, and a traveling carriage on which the said lever is fulcrumed,substantially as shown Aand described.
2. In a computing-scale, a weighing-beam, a platform, a connection between the weighing-beam and platform-frame, and comprising a sleeve held movable on the said weighing-beam, a sleeve held movable on the said platform-frame, shoes adapted to engage the said sleeves, a lever for manipulating thefsaid shoes, a traveling carriage on which the said lever is fulcrumed, a disk having a scale, and adapted to turn in unison with the longitudinal movement of the said carriage, and a pointer fixed on the said carriage and indicating on the scale on said disk, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a computing-scale, the combination of a platform, a horizontal frame connected to said platform and arising above the same, a slide movable on the platformframe, a weighing-beam to which the slide is also connected, and an indicator-disk revolubly mounted on the slide and revolving as the same moves, substantially as described.
4. In a computing-scale, a platform, a horizontal frame above the same and connected thereto, a slide movable on the platformframe, an indicating-disk revolubly mounted on the slide and revolving as the same moves, a weighing-beam to which the slide is also connected, and a weight slidable on the weighingbeam and connected to the slide, substantially as described.
5. In a computing-scale, aweighing-beam, a slide movable thereon, a platform-frame on which the slide is also movable, aplatform to which the horizontal frame is rigidly connected, an indicating-disk revolubly mounted on the slide, and two guide-rails longitudinal with the platform-frame, and in which the slide is mounted, substantially as described.

In a computing-scale, a weighing-beam, a slide movable thereon, a platform-frame on which the slide is also movable, a platform to which the platform-frame is rigidly connected, downwardly-projecting legs fixed to the slide, friction-wheels carried by the legs, and horizontal guide-rails longitudinal with the weighing-beam and carrying the frictionwheels, substantially as described.

In a computing-scale, the combination of a frame, a platform on said frame, a platform-frame bar rigid on the platform and extended horizontally above the same, a Weighing-beam fulcrumed on the frame, a sleeve slidable on the Weighing-beam, a second sleeve slidable on the horizontal portion of the platform-frame bar and connected to the first sleeve, and means for clamping the said sleeves on their respective supports, substantially as described.
