GRADUATED DISINFECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 556,948, dated March 24, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknorm that 1, ROBERT S. WEsr, acitizen of the United States, residing at Cleve land, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Graduated Disinfector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to that class of disinfectors which are arranged to automatically discharge a limited amount of purifying fluid over the contents of a receptacle when the coverof said receptacle is opened and closed; and it consists of a bicompartment reservoir substantially triangular in shape with the means for automatically cmptyin g the smaller compartment, as hereinafter more fully described and especially claimed.
The object of myimprovement is to provide adisinfector of the class designated above which is both economical in construction and operation and practically automatic in its functions.
This inexpensive device can be applied to the hinged cover of a garbage-bucket, privyvault, or in fact any receptacle for impurities, and discharges a graduated amount of disinfecting fluid over the impure matter below each time said cover is opened and closed, the quantity of fluid so discharged being limited, so that no waste thereof may ensue.
My device thoroughly disinfect-s with the smallest possible amount of liquid necessary for the purpose.
That my invention may be seen and fully understood by others, reference will be had to the following specification and annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is aside view of a receptacle having my graduated disinfector or reservoir attached to the cover thereof, said cover being closed; Fig. 2, afrontview of said receptacle, said cover being open; Fig. 3, an under side view of said cover without the reservoir; Fig. 4:, an enlarged plan view of the reservoir, and Fig. 5 a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Similar letters and figures designate like parts in the drawings and specification.
The garbage bucket or receptacle A has the cover 1 hinged thereto at 2. The cover 1 is provided with the central filling-hole 3, which is closed by the cap 1. The reservoirBis secured to the under side of the cover 1, preferably by solder, and consists of the floor 5, the end 6, and the converging sides 7 7, while the partition S, near the junction of said sides, divides the interior of said reservoir into the large compartment a and the small compartment 1). The upper edges 9 of the end 6 and the sides 7 are turned over to facilitate fastening the reservoir B to the cover 1. The partition 8 rises from the floor 5 between the sides 7, but does not extend quite to a level with the edges 9. The tube 10 opens at one end through the partition 8 into the compartment 1) near the floor 5, and at the other end below said floor, after traversing the greater part of the length of the compartment a, said tube 10 inclines slightly from the end in the partition 8 downward to where it passes through the floor 5.
The reservoir B is attached to the cover 1, so that the junction of the sides 7 is adjacent to the pivotal point 2, while the end 6 is beyond the hole 3, the outer terminal of the tube 10 being nearly or quite over the center of the receptacle A when said cover is down. \Vhen the cover 1 is raised it will be seen that the compartment 1) is below the compartment (1. After having removed the cap a from the cover 1, filled the reservoir 13 through the hole 3 with disinfecting fluid, and replaced said cap, said cover being closed during the operation, said fluid passes through the tube 10 into the receptacle A until the liquid in the compartment (0 falls to a level with the top of the partition 8 and the compartmentb is empty. Now open the cover 1, as shown in Fig. 2, and the compartment 1) fills with fluid from the compartment a; but none of it can escape, owing to the elevated position of the outlet end of the tube 10, until said cover is again closed, when said compartment Z) empties itself through said tube. In this manner a graduated but fresh supply of fluid is automatically poured onto the contents of the receptacle A each time that the cover 1 is opened for more garbage and then closed until the contents of the compartment a have been exhausted, when the reservoir is again filled, as before described. The size of the compartment 7) regulates, of course, the quantity of liquid poured into the receptacle A each time the cover 1 is manipulated.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a graduated disinfector, of a reservoir having coverging sides, a partition dividing said reservoir into two compartments of unequal capacity by connecting said converging sides near their j unction, said compartments opening into each other over the top of said partition, and a tube opening at one end into the smaller of said compartments and at the other end beneath the larger of said compartments, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
