UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEOR SrE WILLLUI MOORHEAD, OF MILLTOlVN, NEW JERSEY.
ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,762, dated March 24, 1896.
Application filed August 17, 1895. Serial No. 559,612. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WILLIAM Moonnnama citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milltown, county of Middlesex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Erasers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to erasers, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class, and also to combine a rubber or pencil eraser and a steel or ink eraser; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combina-tion and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully described in the followingspecification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my combined pencil and ink eraser, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the ink-eraser.
In the practice of my invention I provide a rubber eraser A, which may be of any de sired form or construction, but which is preferably square in cross-section. This rubber eraser may be used for any of the ordinary purposes for which such devices are employed, and in practice I connect with one end thereof a steel eraser which may be employed for erasing ink-marks or ink-writing or similar purposes.
The steel eraser is composed of a blade B, which may be of any preferred form, but is preferably lance shape in form and provided with an edge at each side thereof lhe blade 13 is provided with a shank O, which is provided with a jaw D, to which is hinged a corresponding jaw E. These jaws D and E are angular in cross section or provided with sides or flanges (Z and e, respectively, and are adapted to be connected with or to securely grasp the end of the rubber eraser A, as shown in Fig. 1, and the hinged jaw E is provided with a spring by Which it is held in place and caused to securely clamp the rubber eraser, as will be readily understood. The end of the spring is shown at F, and the body portion thereof is within the jaw E.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Instead of hinging the jaw E both of the jaws D and E may be made rigid and the rub ber eraser E inserted thereinto, as will be readily understood, and I may also employ an ordinary handle for the eraser B instead of using the rubber eraser A.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a rubber eraser as A, and a steel eraser as B, said steel eraser being provided with a shank and with jaws adapted to grasp the rubber eraser, one of said jaws being hinged and provided with a spring, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed mynanie, in pres ence of two witnesses, this 15th day of August, .A. D. 1895,
GEORGE WILLIAM MOORHEAD.
\Vi tn esses WILLIAM G. Evans, GEO. W.,YEANDLE.
