IMPROVEMENT IN SPARK-ARRESTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,669, dated June 19, 1566.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES BRIGHT KEYES, now ofthe city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful and improved devices or improvements for chimneys, for the comfort of persons and the safety or security of property 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', ret'- erence being,l had to the accompanying drawings, and letters, which form part of the same.

My invention is as follows, it being' for the purpose of gathering, controlling, and directin g the sparks, soot, and smoke ot' locomotives or any other chimney-stack or pipe:

First. I put around the.chimney-stack or pipe a chamber, a a., to which chamber is attached a pipe, l) b, or conductor, through which the resultants ot the tire-as the sparks, soot, and smokepass to the water-tank c c, fixed at the rear end ot' the tender, or to any other suitable location, by means of a continuous pipe, b b. l

Second. On theI top of the chamber a a, I put a revolvingl cover, d d, on which I place and to which I attach a shield or deliector, e e, for the purpose ot' preventing' a pressure otair down the chiml'ley-stack or pipe, Jfor the purpose ot' increasing;` the draft, and for the pur- 'pose of giving; direction to the sparks, soot,

and smoke down into the chamber a a. at fj', and so through the pipe Z) b into the Watertank ce. I also place on the revolvin gcover d d an open-mouthed trum peter g g, opening'direct ly Opposite to the shield or deilector c e, i'or the purpose of gathering,` a current of air or wind and causing the same to pass over the shield or deiiector c e into the chamber c a, thus increasing an upward draft through the pipe h It, thus aiding' combustion, and also disposingot' the contents or result of the lire-as sparks, soot, and smoke.

Third. then used on a locon'iotive-engine, I place at the rear end ot' the tender 7c k a Water-tank, c c, into which, or any other suitable place, l conduct the contents or result ot' the re by means of the pipe I) I), and out, of which tank c c, I let them pass by mea-ns ol" a valve, i1', iixed at the bottom ol" said tank.

Fourth. The revolving cover d (l has fixed to it alcver, to which is attached a rope, chain, or some such thing'or device,'by means ot'w'hich I tui-n the top or revolving' cover d l in any 'direction which may be desirable.

I claim as my inventionl. The revolving coverd d, constructed substantially as described in paragraph two, letters d (l and i t'.

2. The combination ot' the revolving` cover Z d with a shield or dctlector, e e, and an open-mouthed trumpeter g g, substantially as described in paragraph two, letters g g.

The combination of the revolving' cover d d, and the shield or detlector e c, and the open mouthed trumpeter g g, the opening thronghj'f, in connection with a pipe, b b, and the enter-tank c c, and the arrangementifor turning' the cover d d, substantially as described in paragraphs three and t'our.
