APPARATUS FOR COVERING EYELETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,635, dated March 17, 1896.
Application filed January 17, 1896.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELEAZER KEMPSHALL, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Covering Eyelets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for applying to the exposed ends of sheet-metal eyelets an annular covering of plastic material, such as a pyroxyline compound, to present a wearing-surface which will prevent the exposure of the metal of the eyelet.
The invention has for its object particularly to provide such improvements in apparatus of this class as will enable the portion of the cover that extends into the interior of the eyelet to be accurately formed and prevent the formation of a rough or abruptlyprojecting shoulder at the inner margin of the cover.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a sectional view showing a portion of the eyelet-covering apparatus which embodies my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a view similar to Fig. 1, showing an additional member of the apparatus. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of an eyelet formed by the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a represents a die-plate having a socket a, formed to receive the tubular body I) of an eyelet, the upper surface of the plate a constituting a molding-face surrounding the eyelet and adapted to impart a suitable form to the under surface, 0, of an annular head or cover 0, formed on the outer end of an eyelet.

The member (Z is provided with a central projection, d formed to enter the body of the eyelet, said projection being of considerably less diameter than the body of the eyelet, as shown in Fig. 2. The member c has a recess or cavity 8 formed to receive the projection 61 the said member 6 being formed to closely fit the interior of the eyelet and enter the space between the inner surface of the eyelet and the projection (1 In covering an eyelet with the described apparatus the eyelet is placed in the socket of the plate a, and the member 6, which is supported by a'suitable base or holder 6 is inserted in the eyelet, as shown in Fig. 1. An annular washer of the plastic material is then placed upon the upper edge of the eyelet and the member cl is brought down to the position shown in Fig. 2, the projection (Z entering the interior of the eyelet and coming to a bearing upon the wall of the recess 6 of the member 6. The surfaces 61' and c of the two members are thus caused to meet and form a practically continuous moldingsurface, which forms all parts of the head or covering except the under surface 0. The material of the cover is softened and rendered plastic by heat, the dies being heated during the operation.
It will be seen that by making the male die in two separable members which meet within the die, one of said members closely fitting the interior of the eyelet below its molding-surface, I am enabled to accurately form the inner end portion of the cover 0, giving the same a gradual inclination or bevel, as indicated at 0 and avoiding the formation of a rough or abrupt shoulder.
I claim- I 1. As a means for covering the exposed ends of eyelets with plastic material, a dieplate having a socket to receive the body of the eyelet, and a male die composed of two separable members adapted to cooperate in molding the cover within the eyelet.
2. As a means for covering the exposed ends of eyelets with plastic material, a dieplate having a socket to receive the body of the eyelet, a male-die member formed'to enter the body of the eyelet and having a recess ICU or socket at one end and a molding-face surname to this specification, in the presence of rounding said recess and adapted to mold the two subscribing Witnesses, this 13th day of inner portion of the cover, and another male- January, A.
