BRIDLE BIT.
No. 556,564. Patented Mar. 17, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD SOMMER, OF SOMMERSWALDE, AND EMIL POLZIN, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
BRlDLE-BIT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 556,564, dated March 17, 1896.
Application filed August 31, 1895- Serial No. 561,092. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, RICHARD SOMMER, of Sommerswalde, near Schwante, and EMIL POLZIN, of Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridle-Bits, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
The bridle-bit is made of steel, and if the horse should run away said bit Will act upon the gums and the chin of the horse and Will enable the driver in all cases to pull down its head in order to have the horse under control no matter under what circumstances.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 a plan view, and Fig. 3 a side elevation.
lVhen a horse runs away with an ordinary bit, it will stretch the head upward and endeavor to get the bar between its back teeth, making the pulling of the reins useless, and as the horse holds its head upward the reins will be parallel with the horizontal rods of the bit.
In the present case the longitudinal bars are shown at g g and the connecting bit-bar at c, the bars 9 9 having eyes h at each end. A second cross-piece a extends between the bars 9 g, its ends moving in curved slots bin said bars, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. This cross-piece a has a connection with the main bitc by thepins a, the said bit 0 having turning movement in the bars g g.
The longitudinal bars of the bit will always remain oblique to the head of the horse by the sliding in the slot 1), and if the horse bites on the bit and runs away, if the reins are pulled, the cross-piece a will be caught by the rods 9 at the point e, and as said bit-rods g rotate around the stationary bit 0 the leveraction will press against the gums or chin of the horse, whereby it will be compelled to give in and to bend the head.
What we claim is In combination, the slotted side bars, the upper bit 0 journaled therein to rotate, the bit a arranged in the slots of the side bars and the connections between the bits 0 and a independent of the side bars, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD SOMMER. EMIL POLZIN.
