momma- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT COBURN, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
HOPPER 0R BASIN FOR WATER-CLOSETS, WASHSTANDS, 0R URINALS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 556,489, dated March 1'7, 1896. Application filed May 27, 1895. Serial No. 550,761. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT OOBURN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoppers or Basins for Water-Closets, Washstands, or Urinals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to hoppers or basins for water-closets, urinals and stationary washbasins such as are usually formed of earthenware, and the object thereof is to provide improved means of supporting and securely fastening the connections with water and waste pipes and protecting, sustaining and strengthening the hoppers, urinals and basins.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a hopper or basin provided with my improvement, with parts being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 a 'side view of another form of basin.
In the practice of my invention I form around the upper rim or edge of the hopper or basin A a rim or flange B, or provide an annular groove 0 therein, as shown.
WVithin the groove 0 or below the flange B is placed a sectional band D, to each end of which is secured or on each end of which is formed a shoulder or projection E, through which pass screw-threaded bolts F, which are passed through and hold in place a plate G, the ends of which are outwardly curved, as shown, to form proper bearings for the head H of the bolts and permit of a proper connection with the shoulders or projections E, with which they are in substantial alignment.
Secured centrally of the plate G and passing therethrough is ashort tube K ,which communicates with a bore or passage L, formed in the back of the hopper or basin, and by means of which the water-supply pipe is connected with the hopper or basin through the agency of a nut N in the usual manner.
A washer or packing O is also employed between the plate G and the body of the hopper, so that the plate may be securely clamped thereto by the screw-bolts F without danger of breaking the hopper, as will be readily understood.
In Fig. 3 I have shown my improvement applied to a difierent-form of basin, which is held in a vertical position. In this case the band D is formed in two parts, and the separate ends are united at the upper and lower parts in the same manner and by the same means as hereinbefore described, the difference between the two arrangements being that in Fig. 3 the basin is provided with a discharge-pipe P, which passes through the plate G, which holds the bands D together at the lower side of the basin, said pipe P being in communication with a passage formed in the lower side of the basin, (not shown,) but which will be readily understood.
IVhen constructed and applied as shown and described, my invention constitutes a simple and effective device for producing the desired result. There are no spurs or horns projecting from the hopper, urinal or basin therefor. There is no danger of breaking the connections, as in the present system, where, when the spur or horn is broken, the whole fixture is lost, and, furthermore, the necessary plumbing in connection therewith can be done with much greater ease and much less difliculty than formerly.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a hopper or basin for water-closets, urinals and washstands provided with an annular groove around the rim thereof, of a sectional band secured in said groove, the ends of the separate sections of the band being united at the top and bottom of the hopper or basin, by means of clamping plates connected therewith, and means connected with the upper plate for forming a connection with a water-supply pipe, and with the lower plate for forming a connection with a discharge-pipe, each of said pipes being in communication with the interior of the hopper or basin, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a hopper 0r basin, of a rim B thereon provided with an annular groove C, a band D arranged in said groove a shoulder E on each end of said band, the
plate G having bearings formed thereon, the my invention I have signed my name, in presbolts F securing said plate and the shoulders enoe of the subscribing Witnesses, this 25th 10 together, the head H a short tube K passing day of May, 1895.
throu h the plate and eonnr'nunieatim with a r 1 T 5 bore f in the hopper or basin, and a washer ROLER l LOIURN 0 arranged between the plate and the hop- \Vitnesses:
per or basin, substantially as described. PERCY I. GRIFFITH,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as L. M. MULLER.
