FOOT-VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,433, dated March 17, 1896.
Application filed November 19, 1895. Serial No. 569,477. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. NEWNAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Vises; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in foot-Vises, and my object is to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, economical in cost, reliable,durable and efficient in use; and to these ends the-invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the acco1npanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved foot-vise. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the device. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line as, Fig. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 1 y, Fig. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional View illustrating one of the jaws and a modified form of die-block. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail view in perspective illustrating the locking-arm.
Similar reference-characters indicating corresponding parts in the views, let the numeral 5 designate the stationary frame of the device attached to the top of the standard (5. The frame 5 is composed of a heavy band of metal surrounding the upright jaws 7 and S. The jaw 8 is pivoted at 9 on the standard 6. The pivot 9 passes through an aperture formed in a right-angular projection 8 formed on the lower extremity of the jaw. The jaw 7 is pivoted on a disk 10 eccentrically mounted on a crank-pin 12, provided with a feather or spline 12 engaging a counterpart groove formed in the disk 10. This disk is located in an aperture formed in a tongue 7 projectin g at right angles from the lower extremity of the jaw 7 and engaging a slot formed 1n a projection 8 of the jaw 8. This projection 8 is also apertured to receive the crank-pin, which is journaled therein. To one side of this aperture is formed a groove to allow the spline on the pin to enteras the pin is insorted in the disk.
The'lower extremity of the jaw 7 is provided with a hook 7 to which is attached the upper extremity of a coil -spring 13. The lower extremity of this spring is connected with the upper extremity of a rod 14, whose lower extremity is connected with the footlever 15 by a pivot 16. The lever 15 is fulcrumed at 16 on a leg 6 of the standard 6, whose lower extremity is forked and the two legs spread apart sufficiently to give the device a firm support when secured to a post or otherstationary structure. (See Fig. 2.) In this figure the device proper is shown attached to the post 30 by bolts 31 and 32. The pivot-pin 16 also connects the lower extremity of a pitman 17 with the foot-lever 15. The upper extremity of this pitman is pivotally connected with the outer extremity of a lever 1S fulcrumed on a pin 10 and having a projection 18, whose upper extremity is slotted to receive one extremity of a-link 20 whose opposite extremityis connected with the jaw 8 by a pivot-pin 2,1. The link 20 is connected with the projection 18 011 the lever 18 by a pivot 22. The fulcrum-pin 19 passes through apertures formed in the stationary frame 5.
The jaws '7 and 8 are surrounded by a yoke 23 located above the frame 5 and resting thereon. The extremity 23 of this yoke is provided with a threaded aperture in which is inserted a hand-screw 24, whose inner extremity en gages or bears against an upwardlyprojecting lug 5 formed on the frame 5 and lying between the arms of the yoke.
The position of the jaw 7 is regulated by the use of the hand-screw, whose outer extremity is provided with a cross-head 24. This cross-head has short right angular projections 24 formed 011 its extremities. These projections are adapted to receive an arm 25 having an elongated aperture in one end, whereby it is adapted to slip over the crosshead to engagement with the projections 24. By the aid of this lever-arm the apparatus becomes a screw-vise. Normally the arm 25 hangs loosely upon the screw between the ICO yoke extremity and the cross-head. FY0111 this position it is easily shifted to the lugs 24 and by its aid any degree of grasping force may be imparted to the jaw 7.
The jaw 8 of the vise is recessed at its up per extremity to receive a detachable steel die, which assists in the shaping of calks on horseshoes. There are two forms of dies A and B. The form A is adapted for forming sharp ealks and has an inclined face A, which rises as it recedes from the gripping extremity of the jaw. This die A is also provided with a V-shaped groove A into which the calk is driven to complete the act of sharpening. The working face of the die B lies in a horizontal plane and is adapted for use in forming dull-calks. is shown in place.
The foot-lever 15 is composed oftwo parts 15 and 15. The last-named part is hinged to the part 15 at 15-, and is provided with an extension 15 engaging the part 15 on the under side when the lever is in the position shown in Fig. 3. The object of the joint in the lever is to allow the part 15-to automatically assume the position shown in Fig. 1 when the lever is released from pressure, as hereinafter more fully explained.
The device is provided with a lock consisting of an arm" 26, provided with a wedgeshaped lug 26 adapted to pass between the jaw S and the lug 5 when the jaw S is adjusted or moved to the closed position. the drawings, (see Figs. Qand 4,) the lockingarm 26 is pivoted in a plate 35 attached to the post To form a socket for the lockingarm an auxiliary plate 35 is attached to the plate 35, the pivoted extremity of the arm being located between the two plates. In Fig. 1 the socket onlyis shown,'the locking-arm being detached.
From the foregoing description of the mechanism the use and the operation of the device will be readily understood. The jaw 7 may be adjusted by the hand-screw to occupy any desired position with reference to the jaw 8.
Byturning the hand-screw in one direction the jaw 7 is drawn, through the instrumentality of the yoke, nearer the jaw 8, while by turningthe' screw in the opposite direct-ion the jaw 7 will move away from the jaw 8. This movement is accomplished by gravity, aided by the spring 13, which insures the speedy return of the jaw 7 to the wide-open position as soon as the jaw is released by the yoke.- The article to be grasped is then placed between the jaws of the vise and the jaw 8 moved to engagement therewith by pressing with the foot upon the lever 15; i This movement of the jaw S is accomplished through the instrumentality of the pitman 17, the le ver 18 and the link 20. Usually the jaw 8 is held in this position by holding the foot on workman-stands,whereby the limb is not bent or flexed, but occupies a natural position. If
In Figs. 1, 2, and 6 the die B As Shown in for any reason the workman desires to leave thevise, and at the same time hold the article inposition between the jaws, the lock 26 is employed, the lug 26 dropping between the lug 5 and the jaw 8. When it is desired to release the article from the jaws, the foot is slipped from the arm 15 of the foot-lever, and the latter is suddenly raised by the recoil of the spring 13, which is placed under tension when the foot-lever is depressed. The upward movement of the part 15 of the foot lever is limited by the pitman 17. The momentumof the part 15, however, throws the latterto the position shown in Fig. 1, where it remains until the vise is again used. \Vhen in this position the part 15 of the lever is entirely out of the way, and those moving around the vise are notliable to accidentfrom com ing in contact therewith.
The function of the disk 10 eccentrically mounted on the pin 12, as described, is to a horseshoe during the operation of forming the calk on the shoe by the use of the device,
as before explained. The jaw 7 isreadily lowered to the position shown in Fig. 3 by changing the positionof the disk 10. This is accomplished by turning the pin 12, which is provided with a crank 12. The turning of the pin turns the disk, since the feather on the pin engagesa groove in the disk, as before explained.
'VVhile the vise has been described with special reference to its use in fitting horseshoes and forming the calks thereon it must be understood that its use is general, and that it may be employed in all the varied relations in which a device of this class is generally used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim'is- 1. In a vise, the combination of the stationwith reference to the jaw 8, substantially as described.
2. -In a vise, the combination with a suitable frame, of the pivoted jaws 7 and 8 mounted onthe frame, the foot-lever, the pitman connected with said lever, the bellcrank lever fulerumed on the frame and connected with the pit1nan, the link-connectingthe pitman with the jaw 8, the rod also connected with the foot-l'ever, a coil-spring connecting the rod with the jaw 7, a yoke surrounding the aws, and a screw engaging a threaded.

3. In a vise, the combination with a suitable frame, the pivoted jaws, and suitable means for adjusting and operating the jaws, of means for raising one of the jaws above the other, said means consisting of a crankpin and a disk eccentrically mounted thereon and located in an aperture formed in the jaw, the pin being journaled in a suitable support independent of the jaw to be raised, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a vise, the combination with a suitable frame, the jaws 7 and 8, and suitable means for adjusting and operating the jaws, of means for raising one jaw above the other, said means consisting of a pin and a disk eccentrically mounted thereon and located in an aperture formed in the jaw, the pin being journaled independently of the jaw to be raised, and connected with the disk by a feather and spline, substantially as described.
5. In a foot-vise, the combination with a suitable frame, the pivoted jaws 7 and 8, and means for adjusting the jaw 7, of an operating foot-lever, and means for connecting the lever with the jaw 8, said lever being composed of two parts hinged together, and a yielding connection substantially as described between the lever and a suitable support, whereby as the lever is released, the outer part thereof will rise and remain in an upright position, as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a vise, the combination with the frame, of the pivoted jaws 7 and 8, the operating foot-lever composed of two parts pivotally connected, a suitable connection between said foot-lever and the jaw 8, and a yielding connection, substantially as described, between said lever and the jaw 7, whereby as the lever is released, the outer part thereof will rise to an upright position, as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a vise, the combination with the frame, and the jaws 7 and 8, of a foot-lever composed of two parts pivotally connected, a
suitable connection between said lever and the jaw 8, and a yielding connection between said lever and the jaw 7, said connection consisting of a rod and a coil-spring, whereby as the lever is released, its outer part will rise to an upright position, as and for the purpose set forth.
8. In a foot-vise, the combination of the pivoted jaws 7 and 8, the frame supporting the jaws, a foot-1ever, a suitable connection between said lever and the jaw 8, and a lock comprising the arm pivoted on the frame and carrying a lug adapted to pass between the jaw 8 and the frame, as and for the purpose set forth.
9. In a foot-vise, the combination of the pivoted jaws 7 and 8, the frame supporting the jaws, the operating foot-lever, a suitable connection between said lever and the jaw 8, and a movable locking-arm having a wedgeshaped projection adapted to pass between the jaw 8 and the frame, as and for the purpose set forth.
10. In a vise, the combination with the supporting-frame, the pivoted jaws 7 and 8, and means for adjusting the jaw 7, comprising the yoke surrounding the jaws, the screw passing through a threaded aperture formed in the yoke, its inner extremity engaging the frame, said screw having a cross-head at its outer extremity, and projections or lugs formed on the cross-head, and a detachable arm having an aperture adapted to engage the projections on the crosshead, substantially as described.
11. In a vise, the combination with the supportingframe, the pivoted jaws 7 and 8,means for adjusting the jaw 7, comprising a yoke surrounding the jaws and resting on the frame, a screw engaging a threaded aperture in the yoke, its inner extremity bearing against the frame, its outer extremity being provided with a cross-head having lugs or projections, a detachable lever-arm adapted to engage the lugs on the cross-head, an operating foot-lever, and a suitable connection between said lever and the jaw 8, substantially as described.
12. In a foot-vise, the combination with the frame, the pivoted jaws 7 and 8, and suitable means for adjusting the jaw 7 with reference to the jaw 8, of a foot-lever composed of two parts pivotally connected, a connection with the jaw 7, comprising a rod and a spring, this connection being made between the pivoted joint and the fulcrum, and a connection with the jaw 8, comprising the rod, the bellcrank lever and the link, substantially as described.
