IMPROVEMENT IN TURNING GAS-COCKS BY ELECTRO-MAGNETISM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,642, dated June 19, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL GARDINER, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and improved Electro- Magnetic Apparatus forTurning on Gas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.

This invention relates to an apparatus in which an armature is employed, in conjunction with an electromagnet, to give motion to a wheel whose rotation serves t0 turn a pipecock, and thus let on and shut oft' the gas.
The invention consists in a novel method of applying and supporting the armature, in novel devices for transmitting its motion to the wheel, and in the means whereby the rotation of the wheel is limited and controlled.
In the annexed drawings, A A may represent the helices composing an electro-magnet. B is an armature or metallic bar supported upon short shafts .O G, projecting longitudinally from the h elices A A, and constituting guides upon which the armature slides during its inward and outward movements, the former being effected by the iniluence of the magnet, and the latter by the helical spring' D. This spring encircles a sliding rod, E, placed parallel with and between the helices A A, and secured to the armature B. rlhe rod E extends and slides through the bar F, which forms the heel of the magnet.
To the end ot' the rod E is pivotee1l a click, G, which is made to engage with the teeth ot' a wheel, H, by the spring g. The motion of the wheel H turns the cock I of the gas-pipe, andV so turns the gas off and on.
c is a pin or stud projecting from the rod E, and employed to limit the rotation of the wheel H, or rather determine thc extent of motion which the latter undergoes when the armature B is acted upon by the magnet.
J is a spring attached to the bar F, and
taking into the teeth ofthe wheel H, in order to prevent the reverse movement ot the latter by the retraction of the click G.
To the armature B is attached a helical spring', K, depending from the curved standard L. This spring K sustains the armature to a sufficient extent to overcome the effect of gravity, and thus impart a freedom of motion to the armature and avoid the restraint which would otherwise result from friction while moving upon the guides O O.
The operation of the above-described apparatus may be briefly explained: The helices are magnetized and neutralized, or the circuit is formed and suspended, in the ordinary manner. When influenced by the magnet the armature is drawn against the helices, and the sliding rod E is advanced in the direction of the wheel H, which causes the click to give apartial rotation to the said wheel, and thereby turn the cock I to a corresponding extent. As a repetition of these movements of the sliding rod Eis requisite, the circuit is broken and created and the sliding rod advanced and retracted till the desired end is attained. The armature is retracted or moved away t'rom the magnet by the helical spring D, which is contracted by the armature when the latter is moved bythe magnet.
As before stated, the click Gis prevented from acting upon the wheel H during its reA turn or backward movement by thc retainingspring J.
Dark and light colors ou the face of the wheel H are made to indicate the posit-ion of the cock, so that a glance will be sufficient to ascertain whether-the gas is fully or partially turned on or oli'.
M is an adjustable collar, which may be set in different positions on the sliding rod E by means of the thumb-screw N, so as to vary the tension or force of the spring D. The closing of the gas-cock is effected by continuing its rotation in the manner described.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new herein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. Turning a gas-cock by means ot' a sliding rod, E, and click G, acting directly upon the toothed wheel H on the axis of said gascock, and employed in combination with an 5.
