Description

, SI El Telegraphic Sounder.
No. 55,627. Patented Ju"ne19. 1866.
num %uuuu j UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL F.DAY, OF BALLSTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOUNDER-MAGNETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,627, datcd June 19, 186G.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL .F. DAY, of Ballston, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Telegraph-Instruments, of which the following is a speoification.
The nature of my inventon consists in the construction of the bed or rest for telegraphinstruments in the manner hereinafter de scribed, by which the sound of the instrument is rendered much more audible and distinct.
In the acoompanyin g drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the instrument. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the center of the instrument.
A is a metallic frame resting on a table or other support on feet a a, and may be fastened to such support by means of screws passing through holes b b. To the top of this frame is securecl the wooden insulator or soundingboard B by means of screws passing through the cars c c.
D D are the magnets; E, the horizontal lover supporting the armature H. The hori zontal lever E is supported and kept in place by the posts d d in the usual manner. Under the magnets D D and the posts d d, and between them and the sounding-board B, however, a bridge or raised metallic plate, C, is placed. This plate or bridge C is insulated from the frame A by the wooden insulator or sounding-board B, to which the said bridge or plate C is fastened by means.of screws. The bridge C is so arched that it touches the insulator only at the ends, and thus there is a hollow space or opening between the posts d d and the sounding-board or insulator B.
The conducting-wires pass through the plate or bridge C, but are insulated from it.
By means of this arrangement of parts a lond and sonorous tone is obtained by the striking of the horizontal lever E upon the screws e andfwhen the circuit is made complete or broken, and a current which is so weak as otherwise to be almost entirely useless will cause this instrument to sound clear and distinct, so that it can be easily read.
Having thus fully described and illnstrated my invention and the manner in which it may be usefully employed, I claim 1. The combination of the posts d d with the raised plate or bridge Y C, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the metallic frame A, sounding-board or insulator B, and metallic bridge or arched plate C, for the purpose set forth.
SAML. F. DAY.
