SPEED-MEASURE AND ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,775, dated March 3, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvUs E. KAsTEN- GEEN, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Speed-Indicator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved speed-indicator which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, arranged to indicate the speed of a desired revolving part, and to sound an alarm when an excessive speed is` reached, the said indicator being especially designed for vessels, cars, and other vehicles, engines, dynamos, and other machinery.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation, partly in section, of the improvement on the line l l of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, in section, of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
The improved speed-indicator is provided with a shaft A, on which is secured a pulley A', over which passes a belt A2, connected with the revolving part the speed of which is to be indicated. The shaft A is mounted to turn in the lower end of a casing or frame B, and on the upper end of the said shaft A is secured a cross-piece C, forming part of a weight-governor C, provided with two spring bands C2 and C3, pivotally connected at their lower ends with the outer ends of the cross piece C@ The upper en ds of the spring-bands C2 and CS are pivotally connected with an arm C5, mounted to rotate loosely at its middle on a pivot-pin D, attached to the lower end E of a rack E, mounted to slide in suitable bearings in the frame or casing B.
On the spring-bands C2 and C3 are held adjustable weights C5 and C, respectively, by set-screws C7, and the said weights are provid ed with screw-rods C8, connected with each other by coil-springs C9, and a second set of screw-rods C10 is likewise attached on the said weights and connected with each other by coil-springs C11.
Now it will be seen that when the shaft A is rotated the governor C is actuated and the weights C5 and C5, owing to centrifugal force, are caused to iy outward in opposite directions, whereby the springs C11 are extended, as the said springs are under constant pressure, and when the said weights have moved outward a certain distance, then the other springs Cf come into play, so as to take up the centrifugal force. The weights C5 and C6 in moving outward cause a downward pull of the arms C4, whereby a downward sliding of the rack E is produced, and as the said rack is in mesh with a pinion F on a shaft F the latter is rotated by the action of the centrifugal governor C. The outer end of the shaft F is provided with a pointer G, indicating on a dial H, so that the rotary mo tion of the shaft F is indicated by the pointer G on the graduation of the dial II--that is, the speed of the part connected with the pulley A is thus measured.
On the shaft F is also secured a second indicating-wheel I, which serves as a fly-wheel, and the shaft F is provided on its peripheral surface with a graduation I', which can be read through a glass J in the top of the frame or casing B. It is understood the speed read by the pointer G on the dial II corresponds with that read bythe operator through the glass J on the graduation I.
On the rack E is held adjustable a bar K, provided with the elongated slots K, through which pass the set-screws K2, so as to permit of shifting the bar K vertically on the rack E. The lower end of the bar K is adapted to move in contact with a spring L, )rejecting I from one end of a lever N, fulcrumed at N on an insulating-plate B held in the casing B. The upper end of the lever N is drawn on by a spring N2, so as to hold the said lever out of normal contact with the contact-plates IN. One of the contact-plates P is connected with au alarm l of any approved construction, and the other contact-plate P is connected with a battery O, or other suitable source of electrical supply, so that when the rack E is drawn downward by the action of the centrifugal governor C beyond a certain IOO predetermined point then the hair li engages the spring` L to eri-use the lever N to swing` and ineke Contact with the eontziet-plites l.
